Finding Her Edge Review

In this Netflix YA drama, we follow Adriana Russo and her new partner, Brayden Elliott’s journey on and off the rink as they train for the World Championships, try to save the Russos’ failing business and handle their budding feelings for one another. The series, reminiscent of The Summer I Turned Pretty, is a charming and satisfying watch for most viewers who want something light-hearted and uncomplicated. There are flashes of every other YA drama here that we have come to love and hate, and it will leave you feeling rather giddy from time to time, despite some downsides.

The series, as mentioned previously, is quite charming and is perfect for an unserious binge. Viewers will enjoy the light drama and romance as Adriana struggles with her feelings for both Brayden and Freddie, and worries about her family’s business. Of course, she and Brayden get into a fake relationship to secure a sponsorship to hopefully save the family rink, and that’s how things turn into something more full of longing.

The series is obvious and uncomplicated, which is both a good and bad thing. The predictable dialogue and scenarios can be annoying but also feel familiar and warm, depending on the viewer’s mood. This is cliched and formulaic and doesn’t bring anything new to the table, thus taking away any feelings of longing or tension that one might expect from a will-they-won’t-they show. It’s such an obvious and repetitive pattern for these YA dramas that once you have seen one, you might have seen them all.

Plus, the love triangle aspect is so done to death at this point that it doesn’t bring out a sense of happiness or romance as you’d expect. The series’ resolution of said love triangle also feels a bit disappointing, and, without giving away spoilers, it leaves us rather frustrated and annoyed. Madelyn Keys and Cale Ambrozic’s chemistry feels tighter and more interesting, and thus it leaves us with a lot of “what ifs” and disappoints us thoroughly.

I think the biggest downside is that the emotional tension between the leads feels muted and flat, making this easy to watch but, ultimately, unimpactful. The dialogues have a lot to blame, as they feel unoriginal and obvious in some places.

Either way, the ice skating themes and visuals are fresh and interesting and Finding Her Edge looks absolutely gorgeous. The snowy visuals and the figure skating sequences will leave a smile on your face, and it provides a scenic backdrop for you to daydream to a certain extent. I also enjoyed the themes surrounding perseverance, family legacy and personal identity, which make the series feel well-rounded and give it a wholesome emotional core for us to latch on to.

Final Thoughts

In the end, Finding Her Edge is fine and is a lighthearted and engaging YA drama if you have your expectations balanced. There is enough romance, skating aesthetics and emotional threads to keep viewers entertained, especially if you want a cosy watch without getting too deep. It’s not a groundbreaking or memorable experience, and the themes and characters are familiar, but it’s fine for a one-time watch. It’s pleasant but just not profoundly memorable, but I guess that was never on the cards to begin with.
