The Wrecking Crew Review

In this Prime Video action-thriller series, we get high-octane action sequences and a lot of bromance that make this film a rather enjoyable ride from start to end, but little else. The best part of the film is the chemistry between Bautista and Momoa, as both are blockbuster veterans given contrasting personalities in the film that constantly clash against one another. It makes for an intriguing affair that most viewers will find entertaining.

However, the core story leaves much to be desired as the plot is formulaic and obvious, making this underwhelming. Most scenes, although full of sparks, are predictable and the emotional beats are underdeveloped. There is a lot of spectacle but very little surprise. Moreover, it tries to balance humour with serious drama, which can sometimes feel quite non-commital and, thus, uneven in tone. Genre fans will enjoy it for what it is – a forgettable ride full of spectacle but offering little else.

The Wrecking Crew Ending Explained

The film focuses on the mysterious murder of half-brothers James and Jonny’s father. Following clues as he tries to uncover why and how he was murdered, originally labelled as a hit-and-run. As they dig deeper through a murky world full of crime and violence, they uncover some shocking secrets that prove that their father wasn’t just a victim of a random situation, but was a deliberate victim of something deeper – a part of a larger conspiracy involving organised crime and local corruption in Hawai’i.

Who is the murderer? Why was Walter killed?

Towards the midpoint of the film, we learn that the wealthy and duplicitous Robichaux is their father’s murderer. He killed Walter because Robichaux was involved in several illicit deals connected to land development and criminal enterprises that Walter had uncovered, and he had to pay the price for it. However, just before his death, Walter had sent a pendrive with all the incriminating evidence against Robichaux to Jonny, which the Yakuza were desperate to retrieve, triggering this entire situation.

After realising that they cannot take Robichaux down through legal routes due to his involvement with Governor Monroe, the brothers get into an emotionally exhausting showdown, where they go up against Robichaux after he kidnaps Leila and Haunani.

The two brothers are almost defeated until Jonny detonates a grenade in front of him and Robichaux. James rescues his brother from the water, while Robichaux is killed. Later, Peter Mahoe is arrested as well for his role in the conspiracy, and the brothers can live together in peace.

Jonny is later handed the name of the man who killed his mother, but he chooses to leave the past in the past and move on.
