Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy Review
In Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy, one must follow what is possibly the most annoying and immature protagonist, whose delusions will leave viewers confused from the moment the film starts. It’s pretty clear that Joy’s professional and personal lives are quite crappy, but finding ways to justify it when the situation is so obvious must be a delusion of another level. There is a moment quite early on when we learn that Joy had no idea her crush’s girlfriend, now fiancée, existed and believed she would be asked to marry him. It’s almost as if she walks right past the red flags and has no self-preservation.
Tyler Perry’s content is a hit or a miss, mostly a miss, and the film, with the upcoming festive season, is quite the miss if you’re looking for a fun Christmas watch. However, the film is quite different from Perry’s other ventures and showcases two broken people coming to terms with their lives and overcoming their issues, and falling in love in the process.
The film highlights how important it is to find warmth and love during the holiday season and how, beyond everything, all of us want someone to call our own and share our pains with without judgment. In a way, the film will leave you feeling rather happy, as, beyond the annoying protagonist that the film starts with, we see a character development throughout the runtime that will leave a smile on your face. I think there’s merit in Perry’s film and, for once, I didn’t feel uncomfortable watching Joy and Ridge interact with one another.
However, the film might feel slow and predictable in some ways. As the central characters get stuck inside a small cabin during a terrible thunderstorm, things start to get deeper and more personal as the hours go by. The initial friction gives way to something rather sweet, and it gives you butterflies at some points as well. But, at other moments, the story takes an obvious turn which will make you roll your eyes, especially Joy overlooking the glaring red flags and some twists and turns along the way.
Moreover, other than Joy and Ridge, the other characters are quite half-baked and unimpressive and have been added solely for comic relief. I think people not having any personality in a film feels out of place and odd, and that’s not any different in this film. However, as mentioned previously, this is quite different from most of Perry’s other melodramatic and over-the-top shows, which will take you by surprise. It’s quite relatable and enjoyable in many ways and will leave you with a smile on your face.
Final Thoughts
Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy is an emotionally satisfying holiday romance that is surprisingly restrained and deep. Although the supporting characters just exist for the sake of it, Shannon Thornton and Tosin Morohunfola are delightful and will give you butterflies.
