The Trial Season 2 Review

In Hotstar’s Hotstar, Noyonika continues on her upward trajectory in her job while battling an equally perilous battle at home. With Rajiv now on a quest for political fame, the family faces many stressors, including relentless attacks from the opposition party. Much like last season, The Trial Season 2 focuses a lot on Noyonika’s work at the court and very little focus is had on her home life and the growing resentment. Although the series tries to focus on her relationship with her daughters this season, it goes out like a fuse as soon as it starts, showcasing her deftness at handling cases in its place.

And that’s a good watch, honestly. It’s quick, it’s enjoyable, and it gives a very clear picture of who Noyonika, as our protagonist, is. I enjoy watching clear-minded and headstrong female protagonists in shows because they encourage their viewers, young or old, to trust in themselves and be confident. However, with her home life apparently being a significant focus, the series tends to overlook it more often than not. There are also moments when Noyonika behaves so incredibly stupidly that you can’t help but question her character arc because it feels so out of the blue.

After making a big fuss about Rajiv’s political career and her daughter’s dangerous panic attack, we somehow forget that she has a life outside the workplace after the second episode. Jisshu Sengupta makes sporadic appearances, but it’s mostly a second thought that’s as good as forgotten. However, it’s interesting that the series sometimes draws parallels between the cases that Noyonika handles and her own life’s woes, making for a good discussion.

I will also give kudos to the series for introducing some very interesting drama surrounding the law firm itself, which makes the series much more delicious. Some supporting cast members are absolutely fantastic and will make the experience of watching the series much better. I think the series, although it doesn’t focus too well on Noyonika’s family life, does a good job of showcasing the emotions that make an office run. It’s an interesting, light-hearted watch, and although nothing extraordinary, it will keep you hooked regardless.

I found Kajol to be great. She makes for a memorable protagonist who is headstrong and resilient but leaves space for mistakes and accepts apologies. Although not all of us will be open to forgiving our cheating husbands, I guess more power to her. Noyonika takes up most of the space this season, although Sheeba Chaddha’s Malini and Alyy Khan’s Vishal engage in an interesting battle that tests their friendship. Other than them, no one else gets much of a space on the screen, which isn’t the worst thing this time around.

With some interesting twists and turns, The Trial Season 2 is engaging, thanks to the dedicated performances by the entire team. The series isn’t a very deep watch, but it has its moments of intrigue, and you will find yourself rooting for Noyonika more often than not. Do I wish for her to have proved her mettle a bit more? Sure. But what we get isn’t half bad!
