Unspeakable Sins Review
Considering this is an erotic thriller, one can imagine the kind of things Netflix will pull up and that’s exactly what we get with Unspeakable Sins, a rather generic show that, to its credit, has quite a few twists and turns that will leave viewers invested. Following Helena’s story of trying to get away from her abusive husband, we get to sex dungeons, orgies and unending murders as Helena cheats on her husband, manipulates others to do her bidding and other characters murder people as if it’s not that big a deal.
As mentioned above, the series isn’t just full of erotic moments, although there are quite a few of those. It is quite full of genuine twists that will leave any and all viewers invested in thinking about where the series is going. At 18 episodes, this is too big for binging in one day, but there’s still a chance that you will find it somewhat investing and amusing to at least attempt to watch the entire runtime.
Let’s talk about the twists first – I think the series does a good job of introducing its twists and killing off people you might least expect. Although it is thoroughly generic, it is still able to instil some tension and confusing thanks to how long and ardous the journey to the end is. Some deaths come as a shock, although most others feel obvious. For thriller lovers, the series won’t be something fascinating, but it’s watchable, unlike some other shows that call itself a thriller just for the fun of it.
I found most of the characters insufferable. Although all of them are flawed, the problem with these characters is that they are completely unhinged and sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint what is the point of some of their decisions. A lot of it seems to be driven by sex and you will be able to pinpoint that extremely well. At other times, the decisions feel questionable and stupid, and seems to be happening for the sake of it.
Coming to the eroticism, as with most Netflix shows of the genre, there are quite a few steamy scenes, and most seem to pop off for no reason other than to show some skin. THey thankfully taper off towards the end, but I will say that I found them making me want to roll my eyes more than anything. However, credit where it’s due – they are shot extremely well and don’t look forced. So… there’s that!
Other than that, the Unspeakable Sins is doesn’t offer much else. I think weighing the pros and cons for this series would make the most sense and, in that way, I feel like 18 episodes is overkill. It has its moments, but I wouldn’t ask anyone to watch ~ 9 hours of content based on just that.
Final Thoughts
Unspeakable Sins is fine. It’s nothing more, nothing less. The series attempts to be somewhat thrilling and seems to at least try to balance its various elements. I guess it’s somewhat able to achieve that but at ~ 9 hours, I feel like there isn’t enough to make it worth it.
