Trainwreck: Poop Cruise Review: Entertaining But Surface Level

Trainwreck: Poop Cruise Review: In the third documentary in the series, we follow the infamous Carnival Triumph’s voyage from Galveston, Texas to Cozumel, Mexico, in 2013. Carrying 4,000+ passengers, the ship was expected to be a fun vacation for everyone on board, but it turned into a vacation from hell pretty soon!

Trainwreck: Poop Cruise Review

When you watch a documentary film titled Poop Cruise, you don’t expect there to be a happy ending. But, for some reason, Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, somehow ends on a hopeful note, with the passengers trapped in a luxury cruise ship for 6 days without food or toilets ending the vacation from hell in rather high spirits. Maybe it’s the cabin fever or the happiness of finally being able to see a toilet that flushes, this week’s Trainwreck chapter is rather entertaining, but in a more funny way!

Director James Ross keeps this light and enjoyable, seeing the amusement in a dire situation and focusing on the main story without finding himself astray. The film showcases the vacationers hoping to have a good time, only to find themselves in an impossible situation of having to relieve themselves in small red biohazard baggies. The way the story is told is amusing and, for the most part, viewers won’t be able to feel the sheer dread and panic of the passengers, who have no idea when the ordeal will end.

As mentioned previously, the film keeps things very lighthearted, and since no one was really injured in any way, I think even the passengers could find themselves laughing at the sheer absurdity of the situation. You can see clearly how things went from good to bad to worse quickly and the film’s fast pace helps you to not think too much about the poop floating on the decks towards the end of the Carnival Triumph’s ill-fated voyage.

I think this is also a problem with the film – although I am thankful for not seeing sewage for a lengthy amount of time, I think viewers don’t really get the true feeling of that situation. You don’t feel the urgency or the shock of seeing something like this happening to you, and while, yes, it’s great for some entertainment for 50 minutes, it doesn’t leave an impact.

The media’s hand in all of this also seems to have been glossed over, and everything is over before you even know it. Unlike The Astroworld Tragedy, where you can’t help but feel the heartbreak of the concert goers in every scene, this film is more jokey in its approach and won’t leave a lasting impact.

Final Thoughts

Trainwreck: Poop Cruise is entertaining but not memorable. The film takes the subject matter a bit too lightly than required and doesn’t make you feel the intensity of the situation that the passengers felt during their vacation. It’s fine, but nothing spectacular.
