The Four Seasons Review: This Should’ve Been a Movie… Oh Wait

The Four Seasons Review: Three suburban couples, who have been friends for a long time, find themselves in a very uncomfortable position when one of them splits up and then one of them brings a very young woman to subsequent trips.

The Four Seasons Review

Ah, adult relationships and problems – they are never fun or exciting and are mostly always stressful. The Four Seasons brings forth a very interesting perspective from the point of view of older married couples who have been together for years at this point. Life’s slowed them down, and things have hit a sort of plateau, and although there’s still love there, it requires work to keep the spark alive.

This Netflix series, thus, is quite relatable and also oddly annoying. I think the problem is that this should’ve been a movie. It’s too long and too repetitive to keep us amused because let’s be honest, getting in the middle of old people’s relationships for too long can be exhausting! The Four Seasons is something like that, it’s 8 episodes of bickering and seemingly meaningless conversations between adults who have terrible communication.

I found some of the storylines quite amusing and even funny at times. I think it was interesting to see the couples overcoming their issues and coming to terms with their shortcomings and staying together after rediscovering their love for one another. It’s sort of inspirational in a way and makes for good TV, especially if you have nothing to do and want to watch some petty drama. Other than that, it gets a bit annoying and overwhelming, and there are long stretches of the series that feel extremely repetitive.

That’s why I constantly found myself wondering why this isn’t a movie or why the movie was turned into a miniseries. Although the seasons change, the situations that the characters find themselves in feel rather bland and clichéd. If not for the fantastic actors who star in this, it would’ve been a pain to sit through. The series doesn’t add anything new to the discussion, and episode after episode, we watch the same thing happening like a broken record.

I acknowledge the message that is being given here, and that’s fine and dandy, but there has to be some entertainment for it to stick. I think the series feels a bit random, and the story doesn’t follow. Thus, despite some funny moments, it doesn’t really leave us feeling anything for the characters or the stories. There were some really sweet moments full of emotion and understanding, but the lack of communication among the characters really got to me after a while!

The Four Seasons is fine, but nothing particularly memorable. I am not sure why this wasn’t turned into a movie; it would’ve made for a tighter runtime with less unnecessary bickering. Skip this one if you don’t like long, drawn-out dramas.
