The three-part series revisits the events of Latin America’s deadliest air disaster that took place in São Paulo, Brazil, on the night of July 17, 2007. On this night, an aeroplane overshot the runway at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo and crashed into a building belonging to the same airline. Taking 199 lives in this incident, a nationwide debate on aviation safety sparked, and resulted in shocking revelations.

This docuseries looks into the investigations that took place after the tragic accident and who was to blame for the incident. With interviews from many connected to the disaster, this series opens up an intriguing yet heartbreaking sequence of events for the viewers. As tears flood the screen when you see helpless family members recount the day of the event and the last memory they hold of their loved ones, you will be easily swept away by emotions.

However, the series doesn’t stop there as it then captures your attention by presenting the investigation that revealed some shocking information related to the tragedy. Situated right in the middle of the busy city, Congonhas Airport in São Paulo exceeds its risk factor in many ways. A small runway, improper maintenance, and all in the middle of one of the busiest times Brazil’s aviation had seen, were among the many factors that were finally taken more seriously after this disaster.

You can see that the airport is calling out for tragedy to happen, but it doesn’t end there. A previous air disaster also comes out in this docuseries, which acts as one of the many warning signs that were given before this disaster struck. It was truly shocking to see the number of legal violations that were ongoing during this time, which only leaves me all the more stunned. And adding on to this were the big names- from CEOs to politicians, who did nothing but rub salt on the wounds of the families desperately looking for their loved ones.

Aside from the investigations that took place and the events that followed, the docuseries focuses on the current scenario and the effects of the incident. A memorial that stands at the site of the accident acts as a reminder to those who are slowly forgetting the tragedy. The memorial, too, is slowly fading away under the lack of maintenance, but this series aims to remind everyone of the lives lost due to negligence. While the big names continue to rise even after this tragedy, this disaster should never be forgotten for those who were lost too soon.

Summing Up

A Tragedy Foretold: Flight 3054 is a docuseries dedicated to those lost too soon because of the negligence and twisted mindset of some. It shows how a tragedy that could have easily been avoided was allowed to happen simply because of the people who ignored the many visible signs.
