Dhoom Dhaam Review: Forgettable But Thoroughly Entertaining

In Netflix’s newest action rom-com film, Veer Poddar and Koyal Chadda find themselves as an odd couple paired up through an arranged marriage setting. However, when their first night brings two gunmen to their suite, they proceed to go on a wild chase to figure out where Charlie is. But… who is Charlie?!

Dhoom Dhaam Review

The best part about Yami Gautam Dhar and Pratik Gandhi’s Dhoom Dhaam is that it’s a light-hearted and silly action-romance film that knows exactly what it is. It doesn’t try to overdo the action, or the comedy and keeps all of it strictly in the middle, giving us a rather forgettable yet entertaining watch. The film follows a newly married couple who hardly know each other (thanks to the arranged marriage setting) run for their lives and find a pendrive before they are killed by a bunch of goons. Of course, panic and insanity ensue and they finally learn about each other through this experience.

The film is quite cliched and there’s not a lot that’s new here. But Gautam Dhar and Gandhi make for an oddball couple who bring out some chuckles with their honest performances. There’s a lot that the film ends up not explaining and a lot that it conveniently brushes under the rug, but the performances make you want to ignore all that and go on the ride. The basic storyline of the lost pen drive and the couple trying to find out its location by retracing their steps is a very cliched plot that doesn’t take you by surprise at any point though. It’s annoying how charming the movie feels in spite of this lazy script, but sometimes even the most cliched and unimpressive storyline can be entertaining.

The film has a ton of humorous moments, mostly with Gautam Dhar and Gandhi getting into silly situations and reacting in different ways. Again, their opposite reactions don’t come as a shock or a surprise to anyone but the actors make it work. They share good chemistry and Gandhi, especially, is fantastic as Veer in his comedic moments. He’s the scared groom who has never hurt a fly (and not just because he’s a vet) while Gautam Dhar, as Koyal, is the badass in the relationship who has kept her “jhalli” identity hidden from her family in order to enjoy some amount of freedom. There’s a cliched monologue about it, obviously, but we don’t see further into the topic apart from that. The generic layout of the film is its biggest weakness.

That being said, I think the film is very entertaining. Most of the comedy moments land and I found myself laughing more often than not. Regardless of the annoyingly cliched plot, the fast pace keeps things moving and you are on to the next adventure before you have a chance to get bored. You will be able to figure out the end twist from a mile away, but, again, the performances make you laugh through the mediocrity.

Final Thoughts

Dhoom Dhaam is your generic Netflix rom-com with a dose of insane action sequences that sometimes don’t make much sense and are mostly cliched. However, the honest performances across the board and the humorous moments are entertaining and the fast pace helps a lot. This isn’t the best Netflix Bollywood fare this year by a mile, but it’s definitely good forgettable entertainment.
