Let’s begin.

6 Korean Dramas of Gangnam B-Side Actor Ji Chang-wook

Welcome to Samdal-ri

We begin with one of the green flag roles played by the actor earlier this year as Cho Yong-pil. We all have a soft spot for Yong-pil whose love remained the same for one person, despite the years that passed by. His love doesn’t just stop at Sam-dal but also extends to her family as he puts his loved one before his own dreams. Yong-pil is definitely the kind of supportive person everyone dreams of having in his life and when played by Ji Chang-wook, the character’s innocence and love bloomed.

Directed by Cha Young-hoon, the drama stars him alongside Shin Hye-sun, Kim Mi-kyung, Seo Hyun-chul, Shin Dong-mi, and other cast members. The plot revolves around childhood friends turned lovers, who drifted apart due to an incident. But when fate brings them back to their hometown, a second chance stands before them.

Queen Woo

Another hit show from this year, Ji Chang-wook brings about a brilliant performance in his role as King Gogukcheon. He has certainly taken over the spotlight when the show hit the screens, despite his limited screen time. He beautifully brings out the King’s aura throughout his time on the show and is able to enchant the audience.

Directed by Jung Se-kyo, he stars alongside Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Mu-yeol, Jung Yoo-mi, Lee Soo-hyuk, and other cast members. The plot revolves around a queen’s struggle to ensure the safety of the throne. When the sudden death of her husband throws her into the middle of chaos, she has to establish a new ruler within 24 hours.

Suspicious Partner

There is hardly anyone who can forget prosecutor turned private attorney Noh Ji-wook whose life took a turn due to one unfortunate case. This was one of his most iconic roles that took us through a rollercoaster with the way his character shifts throughout the series. A realistic yet dreamy man, this was a character that we have all loved.

Directed by Park Seon-ho, he stars alongside Nam Ji-hyun, Choi Tae-joon, Kwon Na-ra, Dong Ha, and other cast members. The plot revolves around a brainiac prosecutor whose life takes a turn when he comes across a justice department rookie who is caught in a murder case.

The Sound of Magic

The magical experience Ji Chang-wook brings through his portrayal of Ri Eul is something unexpected yet fresh. This was a character that took us on a beautiful ride while making us laugh and cry at the same time. Playing a character straight out of a Webtoon, he surely aced his role and brought smiles to our faces.

Directed by Kim Seong-yoon, he stars alongside Choi Sung-eun, Hwang In-youp, Oh So-hyun, Ji Hye-won, and other cast members. The plot revolves around a high school student who is living a tough life. However, things come to an abrupt change when she meets a magician in an abandoned amusement park who makes her believe in magic.

Empress Ki

Ji Chang-wook really stole the show with his character as the Yuan Emperor whom we remember as Ta Hwan. Different from his strong aura in Queen Woo, where he becomes the silly emperor who is manipulated by all. Yet, when it comes to the woman he loves, he makes sure to keep her with him and keep her safe. He really outdoes himself in this role and brings out a character that left us in tears.

Directed by Han Hee and Lee Sung-joon, he stars alongside Ha Ji-won, Joo Jin-mo, Baek Jin-hee, Jin Yi-han, and other cast members. The plot revolves around a female warrior who becomes the central figure of the Yuan Dynasty. Being forcefully taken away from home and emerging from a lowly status, she makes her way through palace politics and becomes the ruler of the kingdom.

If You Wish Upon Me

Finally, we have the role that had us crying for most of the show- Yoon Kyeo-re. Ji Chang-wook once again left us stunned with his performance and with a script like this one, he only delivered the best performance. The actor truly knows how to pick a good script and with the way he has brought quality work on screen over the years, we can only see ourselves falling for him over and over again.

Directed by Kim Yong-wan, he stars alongside Choi Soo-young, Sung Dong-il, Won Ji-an, Yang Hee-kyung, and other cast members. The plot revolves around a man who is ordered by the court to serve his community service at an end-of-life care facility for the terminally ill. There he is taken through life-changing experiences that build a new man out of him.
