The Frog Ending Explained
The Netflix series The Frog begins in 2021, and focuses on Jeon Yeong-ha, who owns a motel and considers closing it temporarily due to a dangerous animal on the loose, which he fears might pose a risk to his guests. Meanwhile, Yun Bo-min, a police officer recently transferred to the area, arrives at the same forest location.
The narrative then shifts back to the year 2000, where we meet Koo Sang-jun, the owner of another motel, and his family. One rainy day, Koo encounters a mysterious man in a car and, feeling compassionate, invites him to stay at his motel, offering him the best room. However, the following morning, Koo’s wife discovers the gruesome murder of a woman in that room. Panicked, she calls the police, who uncovered that the man they had hosted was a serial killer.

The motel quickly gains a notorious reputation, becoming a crime scene that deters potential guests. The impact on Koo Sang-jun’s family is profound. His middle school-aged son faces bullying at school, where his classmates coerce him into bringing them alcohol or threaten to burn down the motel. The financial strain exacerbates the family’s troubles, leading to frequent arguments between Koo Sang-jun and his wife. Attempts to sell the motel are unsuccessful due to various complications, and eventually, Koo Sang-jun’s wife succumbs to the stress, takes sleeping pills and commits suicide which shows how he became a frog for everyone who got struck by stones carelessly, causing huge ripples in their lives.
In 2021, we return to Jeon Yeong-ha’s rental home, where a guest, Yoo Seong-a, arrives with a young boy. Initially, it seems like the boy might be Seong-a’s son. Yeong-ha, seeing no immediate cause for concern, allows them to stay. However, his initial impression changes when he discovers blood on a phonograph record while playing it. Although he doesn’t suspect anything at the time, the next day he encounters a strong bleach odor in the bathroom of the room where Seong-a stayed. To his alarm, Seong-a has vanished.

Yeong-ha checks the CCTV footage and sees that Seong-a left alone, leading him to suspect that she might have harmed the child. Fearing that reporting the incident could lead to the closure of his rental property, he decides against filing a complaint. Instead, he meticulously cleans the home to erase any evidence of the incident. A year passes with Yeong-ha haunted by the possibility that either the police or the killer might come after him.

Who Was Goo Ki-ho and Why Did He Target the Serial Killer?
Park Chanyeol’s character, Goo Ki-ho, is driven by a deep-seated vendetta. Twenty years ago, his father, Koo Sang-jun, owned a motel that was destroyed by a serial killer. The tragedy led to his mother’s suicide, leaving Ki-ho with a burning desire for vengeance. Over the years, Ki-ho has dedicated himself to meticulously preparing for the moment he could confront the killer.
His plan involves collaborating with his uncle, whose mother is also a patient at the same hospital where Ki-ho intends to strike. As he finalizes his preparations, Yeong-ha arrives at Ki-ho’s place, urgently seeking help. Yeong-ha reveals that Seong-a, a guest at the hospital, is causing similar problems to those Ki-ho’s family faced two decades ago. Misinterpreting Yeong-ha’s intentions, Ki-ho believes he’s a police officer and restrains him.

Undeterred, Ki-ho heads to the hospital’s opposite building, where he successfully kills the killer when he arrives. Upon returning, he releases Yeong-ha and explains everything. Overwhelmed with guilt and despair, Ki-ho attempts to use the gun on himself. Yeong-ha intervenes, saving him and destroying all evidence of the incident. Understanding Ki-ho’s torment and motivations, Yeong-ha takes the gun with him, intending to confront Seong-a and bring closure to the chapter.
What Happened to Yoo Seong-a?
Yoo Seong-a, a disturbed painter from a wealthy family, returns to Seoul for an art exhibition only to discover that none of her paintings are on display. Her frustration escalates when she encounters her ex, leading to a heated argument that reveals a dark truth: the child she killed was his. She had acted out of anger because the child wanted to treat her as a mother, which she resented.

Following this revelation, Seong-a retreats to her forest home. There, she runs into Yeong-ha’s friend, who tells her to leave the rental property. Seong-a responds by insisting that the owner promised to sell it to her. The confrontation turns violent when she is provoked by Yeong-ha’s friend, leading her to imprison him in a room. She then goes to the market to buy bleach.
Upon returning, Seong-a finds Yeong-ha’s daughter searching for her father. A confrontation ensues, and when Yeong-ha calls, Seong-a answers, revealing that she has kidnapped his daughter. Yeong-ha, furious and desperate, is blackmailed by Seong-a, who threatens to kill his daughter unless he helps her with a task. She takes him to a forest, where the police eventually arrive and apprehend her.
Bo-min interrogates Seong-a, who remains arrogant and infuriatingly dismissive. Bo-min, aware of Seong-a’s self-defence claim and her mental health history, anticipates a strong legal defence. During the interrogation, Bo-min questions Seong-a about burying bodies in the field. Despite initial resistance from the chief, Bo-min convinces him to allow a search. Meanwhile, Seong-a’s father’s lawyer arrives with a stern warning for Seong-a to head to Seoul. Frustrated, Seong-a demands that the lawyer sue Bo-min and send her documents, criticizing him for not bringing her passport.

After leaving the lawyer, Seong-a returns to the laundromat, where she burns all her clothes to destroy evidence. Meanwhile, Jeon Yeong-ha’s daughter, who barely survived and saved her child, faces the distress of discovering Seong-a’s escape. Yeong-ha’s anger intensifies when he learns that Seong-a has evaded justice. The search of the field reveals numerous bodies, including Officer Seon Tae’s. When Yeong-Ha informs Bo-min about Seong-a’s escape, Bo-min heads to the cottage, anticipating trouble.
At the cottage, Seong-a encounters Jae-sik, who confronts her with a gun. In a confrontation fueled by rage and memories, Jae Sik shoots Seong-a in the abdomen after a tense exchange. Bo-min arrives and engages in a gunfight with Jae Sik. Despite being shot, Bo-min manages to subdue the situation. Seong-a attempts to retaliate but is unsuccessful and escapes. The aftermath sees the police recovering a body from the pool, and Bo-min clearing out her deceased colleague’s belongings.
Did Jeon Yeong-ha Save His Hotel?
At the end of the story, Yeong-ha closes down his motel for good and returns to his daughter. As the family plans a reunion, they come back to the forest, where Yeong-ha is busy repairing the cottage. A final encounter with Gi-ho suggests lingering unresolved connections. The story concludes with Yeong-ha reflecting on life and the future while at the cottage.
