GG Precinct Review: Taiwanese Crime-Comedy Series is Goofy Fun

In this Taiwanese crime comedy series, an unlikely crew of policemen come together to solve dangerous and puzzling crimes all surrounding Chinese idioms. The eccentric members of the GG Precinct constantly butt heads with one another, especially Wu Ming-han and Lin Tzu-ching, but will they be able to hunt down and put an end to the reign of terror of the Chinese Idiom Killer?

The Netflix series is a spin-off of the 2022 supernatural comedy film Marry My Dead Body. Written by Cheng Wei-hao, Yin Chen-hao and Chou Man-you, the series has 6 episodes, each with a runtime of around 40 minutes.

GG Precinct Review

Netflix’s new crime-comedy series is an odd combination of light-hearted insanity and gruesome bloody murders left and right. The eccentric police officers form the heart of the story and there’s enough backstory here to keep new viewers invested. The storyline is simple and somewhat predictable and the murders happen in quick succession so that viewers don’t have much time to think about much. The barbaric nature of the crimes will pique viewers’ interest while the silly comedic elements keep the series otherwise light-hearted and entertaining.

About the comedy – the series’ rudimentary style of invoking laughter sometimes works and even though it’s really basic and sometimes even predictable, GG Precinct is able to catch your fancy more often than not thanks to the performances. The characters feel like they are right at home in the series and are able to convey the emotions required perfectly. Most of the characters are really goofy and take it to an uncomfortable degree sometimes; coupled with the seriousness of the crimes, it feels surreal to watch.

The more serious moments are also done well… sometimes. Since the crimes have a certain Se7en (1995 film) charm to them, you’d expect the series to hold on to that thrilling atmosphere surrounding solving the crimes which it more often than not doesn’t do though. Thus, even though you enjoy some of the comedy, the thrill aspect misses the mark by quite a bit. Although the series sometimes successfully builds the intensity, it jokes its way through the landing, leaving you a bit annoyed as a result.

However, the biggest problem that I had with GG Precinct is that it is so mind-numbingly dumb sometimes. At times, in order to leave us entertained, the series makes its characters do stuff that is not only illogical but also terrifyingly stupid and ignorant leaving you feeling as if you are on crazy pills. This over-the-top, dramatic and unnecessary kind of humour might be some people’s cup of tea but it really takes away from the experience of the thriller aspects of the series through and through, leaving you feeling a little confused about the point of it all.

That being said, there are some twists and turns in the series that are interesting and there are some connections to Marry My Dead Body that will intrigue fans. Although you might be left disappointed to know that there are no traces of Mao Mao in this series, we do pick up somewhat from where we left off in the movie. The chemistry between the characters is also fantastic and it shows that they have a good grip on their characters from the previous film. However, it thoroughly misses out on the goofy fun and bromance of the last film because the series’ storyline is not out there enough to land the humour all the time.

With some of the most basic jokes that sometimes land thanks to the fantastic cast, Netflix’s GG Precinct gets very old very soon. Although the kills are gruesome, there’s very little done to hold on to the thrill, and any time you think something will leave you shocked, some silly joke will ruin the moment. The series is an enigma of a watch and the genre-bending is done well. There are some intriguing moments and the mystery opens up quite interestingly as well. However, this isn’t for everyone as the humour might just annoy you if you’re not aware enough before going into it!
