Red Swan Episode 8 Recap

After a smooth but deadly fighting sequence between Do-yoon and Lee Jin, during which he is unable to unmask her, he takes an unconscious Wan-soo off in a yacht in order to keep her safe. The next morning, although injured, they both check in with each other, confirming that they are both safe. As they spend a tender moment together, Yong-kook is left astonished when he finds the devastation at the house.

Later on, Yong-kook and Wan-soo have the photoshoot and we see a flashback of her having a conversation about who could’ve sent the assassin to get rid of them. Do-yoon theorizes that it is either Yong-kook or Yong-min, although Wan-soo mentions that the latter didn’t seem to know about the slush funds in the foundation. Do-yoon wonders why Sang-il changed everything to reflect Mi-ran’s name and what could be going on behind the scenes.

After the photoshoot, Wan-soo directly asks Yong-kook whether Yong-min was conceived out of wedlock, taking him by surprise. However, his reaction proves her theory right and he further tells her that his father also hated Yong-min, along with Mi-ran. Turns out it was all a plan, and accordingly, Wan-soo asks Yong-kook about Du-o’s death. On the other hand, Mi-ran asks Sang-il to release the news of Wan-soo’s affair in order to deal with her and Hyun-soo once and for all.

Either way, once the news hits the headlines, Yong-kook is irate with his mother and refuses to divorce Wan-soo. They have a fight, especially about his festering feelings towards her infidelity but Mi-ran refuses to take accountability. Either way, Yong-kook is left deeply heartbroken, unable to express his feelings for his wife. After witnessing this ordeal, Tae-ra makes her exit, realising that no one in the house really loves her.

The next day, Hyun-soo is released from prison and promises to hand over the evidence he has against Hwain to Sang-il in exchange for all the laundered money that is kept under his name in the foundation. However, Sang-il adds another condition – he needs to get the ledgers that Do-yoon has stolen and hand them over as well. He tries to talk to Do-yoon and make him hand the ledgers over, but he remains one step ahead, letting Hyun-soo know the truth about the ledgers. That night, he breaks into Sang-il’s home once again and is finally able to open the safe from which he finds out that Yong-min is Sang-il’s son.

Do-yoon and Hyun-soo make a plan for if something happens to the latter while bringing all of the insanity to light while Yong-kook confronts Sang-il with the truth about his relationship with Yong-min. After reminding him why Mi-ran hates Yong-min and why his own son refuses to acknowledge him, he goes to meet Do-yoon, whom he has imprisoned. Do-yoon tells him everything, including the fact that Du-o was probably murdered and with Wan-soo’s entry, Yong-kook asks her whether or not she loves him. It’s an emotional moment for him and Wan-soo is able to calm him down.

As the day finally arrives to read Du-o’s will, the family finally learns that Du-o had 18 trillion won donated to NOW Foundation, and an additional 16 trillion won left in Wan-soo’s name which she can take out by visiting in person. She is left bewildered at the revelation while everyone else is left irate at the turn of events.

I think I loved Yong-kook’s storyline the most in the last few episodes as he is given a character arc and a traumatic past that a lot of people will be able to relate to. The sequence with him and Mi-ran is so emotional, along with Tae-ra leaving the house, that it can leave viewers wondering what we have missed in the series as a whole. Although he is a cheater, his past really accentuates his struggles and his failures and gives it a very emotional twist that I think Jung Gyu-woon is able to bring out well. Seo Yi-sook is fantastic as always and her screaming at the slightest inconvenience is what keeps me going in the series.

Other than that, no one was surprised about Sang-il and Yong-min’s relationship but the conversation between Yong-kook and Sang-il is quite thrilling to watch regardless. Yong-kook proves to not be the idiot that everyone makes him out to be. I enjoyed watching this episode because it has quite a few dramatic moments that will keep viewers hooked. Plus, Wan-soo and Do-yoon finally kiss, which is great. However, I must say that Kim Ha-neul really lacks that passionate element here. Rain is great though – Do-yoon is cool as a cucumber and his strong and sure behaviour really makes him stand out.

All in all, Red Swan episode 8 ends on a great cliffhanger and makes me, for once, look forward to next week.
