Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 2 Review: The second episode of this brand-new Shounen is here, and it is clearly better than many of the Shonens that came out before. Let us see how the second episode turned out.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword Overview
Wistoria: Wand and Sword is a Japanese manga series by writer Fujino Ōmori and illustrator Toshi Aoi. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine since December 2020, with 10 tankōbon volumes released as of June 2024.
The story follows a boy with no magical talent who relies on his swordsmanship to progress in a magic school, aiming to reunite with his childhood friend.
An anime adaptation, announced in February 2024, is produced by Actas and Bandai Namco Pictures, directed and written by Tatsuya Yoshihara, with character designs by Sayaka Ono and music by Yuki Hayashi.
The series premiered on July 7, 2024, on TBS and its affiliates, featuring the opening theme “Fire and Fear” by Penguin Research and the ending theme “Frozen” by True. Crunchyroll has licensed the series for regions outside of Asia, and Muse Communication has licensed it for Southeast Asia.

We get a bit more background info on how Will was able to get a seat at the prestigious magic school, Regarden Magical Academy, without being kicked out sooner. He has zero magic affinity, so it is absurd that he can be a part of the school, which is specifically constructed for Majes. But it does not mean that he had it easy while entering. Even at the time when he first arrived at the school, he faced extreme criticism and bullying from his peers. They were convinced that he was allowed just because of Elfaria, who became a Magia Vander at a very young age.
One day, the headmistress Cauldron finally calls for him and tests his sword skills by attacking him suddenly with her very strong magic. Will, not only saved his professor, Workner, but also managed to counter every move of the headmistress with his sword. Headmistress Cauldron understood his potential and got him to become a part of her school. However, not everyone was okay with that decision, especially Professor Edward.
He has shown open disdain towards Will from the very first episode, and he becomes all the more agitated towards him after witnessing Will’s true powers. Edward refuses to believe that someone with a sword can manage to hold against a magician, let alone defeat them. Thus, when he rushes towards the headmistress, she finally tells him to conduct his own test on Will. If Will manages to pass, then Edward should not have any complaint regarding him, and if Will fails, then she will expel him.
Hearing this, Edward goes to do exactly that, and he unleashes some very brutal attacks on Will, who was at that time without his sword.
Today’s episode gives us more context about the tower and how one can reach the top of it. We also are sure of Will’s motive, which is love towards his childhood friend. Many people claim that this reminds them of Black Clover, but I would say that this anime is a mixture of many famous franchises. The tower part is reminiscent of the Tower of God, while some aspects make me think of Harry Potter.
Verdict
All in all, this is a good show that has exceptional animation. You normally do not think the animation to be of such great quality from episode one, but here we have a show that maintains visuals from the start. The story is interesting, but it is nothing new. It is a promising show, so I have pretty high hopes.
