Motel California Kdrama: Na In-woo and Lee Se-young Confirmed to Star in MBC’s Upcoming Romantic Series

In an exciting announcement on June 13, MBC confirmed that renowned actors Na In-woo and Lee Se-young will lead the cast of the upcoming romance series Motel California kdrama (모텔 캘리포니아). Directed by Jang Joon-ho and Kim Hyung Min, and written by Lee Seo-yoon, the series is inspired by Shim Yoon-seo’s 2019 novel Home, Bitter Home.

Motel California weaves a tale of love, loss, and reconciliation. The story centres around Ji Kang-hee, a woman who spent her formative years in a quaint rural motel named “Motel California,” run by her father. Portrayed by Lee Se-young, Kang-hee is a resilient character of mixed race, whose diverse heritage subjects her to various challenges and emotional wounds growing up. Her life takes a pivotal turn when she decides to leave her small town on her 20th birthday, seeking a fresh start in Seoul.

In the bustling city, Kang-hee flourishes as an interior designer, reaching the peak of her career over the next twelve years. However, success in her professional life cannot erase the memories and unresolved feelings of her past. Compelled by circumstances, she finds herself returning to her hometown, where she must confront her first love and the life she left behind.

Na In-woo stars as Cheon Yeon-soo, Kang-hee’s childhood friend and enduring love. Yeon-soo, a dedicated veterinarian, has remained single-minded in his affection for Kang-hee, despite the constant matchmaking efforts from the farmers in his village. To fend off their persistent attempts to find him a bride, Yeon-soo pretends to be in a serious relationship with a fellow veterinarian. This ruse sets the stage for a series of misunderstandings when Kang-hee returns and mistakenly believes that Yeon-soo has moved on with another woman.

The rekindling of their relationship is fraught with tension and emotional conflict as they navigate through misconceptions and buried feelings. Motel California promises a rich narrative exploring themes of love, identity, and the intricate bonds that tether individuals to their past.

Lee Se-young, on the other hand, has consistently proven her acting prowess with standout performances in dramas like The Red Sleeve and The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract. Her ability to bring depth and emotion to her characters makes her a perfect fit for the complex role of Ji Kang-hee.

Anticipation is high for the on-screen chemistry between Na In-woo and Lee Se-young, whose performances are expected to bring depth and nuance to this touching story. The production of Motel California is slated to commence soon, with an anticipated premiere in 2025.
