Once adorned with the splendour of courtesans who ruled as queens amidst the vibrant diamond market, Heeramandi now stands as a nexus of intrigue and desire under British colonial rule. At the heart of this enthralling saga lies Mallikajaan, the indomitable matriarch who presides over an esteemed house of courtesans with unwavering authority. However, her reign faces a formidable challenge with the arrival of Fareedan, the spirited daughter of Mallikajaan’s late rival. Their clash ignites a gripping power struggle against the backdrop of a nation teetering on the edge of revolution.
Amidst the upheaval, Mallikajaan’s own family grapples with their desires and destinies. Bibbojaan, her eldest daughter, yearns to embrace the call of freedom, defying her mother’s traditions to join the fight against British oppression. Meanwhile, Alamzeb, Mallikajaan’s younger child, finds himself ensnared in a forbidden romance that defies societal norms, sparking rebellion within his own heart.

As Lahore seethes with unrest and the clamor for independence crescendos, the destinies of these characters become intertwined in a tale of passion, betrayal, and the enduring quest for liberation. In a world where every choice bears the weight of history, their journey unfolds against the backdrop of a nation on the brink of transformation.
One user critiqued X (formerly Twitter), stating that although Sanjay Leela Bhansali presented a narrative of women committed to the freedom struggle in Heeramandi, the expected storytelling finesse was absent. They felt the storyline should have delved deeper into the struggle for independence, but found it lacking in intrigue.
On the flip side, another user expressed admiration for Heeramandi, finding it visually captivating. They couldn’t understand the negative reviews, highlighting the immersive experience provided by every frame, dialogue, Urdu words, song, and set, which effectively transported them to the depicted era.
Conversely, a different Twitter user criticized Sharmin Segal’s performance, considering it a significant disappointment. They felt Segal failed to do justice to her character, particularly in portraying Alamzeb, who is deeply passionate about poetry. They suggested that simply having wide, lifeless eyes and slow lip movement wasn’t sufficient to convincingly portray a character like Alamzeb, labeling it as the weakest aspect of Heeramandi.
