Música Review

Have you ever seen Charlie Puth’s Instagram video where he uploads how he can make music out of every sound? This movie reminded me of that, as it is loosely based on the life of Rudy Mancuso. Música is a coming-of-age movie with a love story all in one. It follows an aspiring creator with synaesthesia who must come to terms with an uncertain future while navigating the pressures of love, family, and his Brazilian culture. A little bit of a rom-com and a whole lot of drama, but there’s a cuteness to it that will make you smile.

The movie begins by introducing us to Rudy, a character whose mind intricately captures every sound, weaving them into a rhythm that permeates his existence. However, this unique ability often proves to be a double-edged sword, as it frequently causes him to become distracted, particularly during conversations with his girlfriend. This constant distraction eventually leads to tension and misunderstandings between them, ultimately culminating in a heartbreaking breakup. His girlfriend, unable to comprehend Rudy’s deep passion for music and puppetry, struggles to connect with him on a level that transcends their differences. Through Rudy’s journey, the film explores themes of communication, understanding, and the sacrifices we make for our passions.

Romantic comedy plots often share common elements, and this particular film seems to follow a familiar pattern, albeit with a unique twist involving music. While the introduction of musical elements adds an intriguing dimension initially, as the story progresses, it can feel overwhelming, detracting from the development of the romance. As a result, the balance between musical spectacle and emotional depth may seem skewed, leaving the romantic aspect of the plot somewhat lacking.

Rudy Mancuso’s character exudes charm and endearment, making him a joy to watch on screen. However, as the film progresses, intentional character flaws emerge, rendering him somewhat unlikable. Surprisingly, this deliberate shift in perception adds depth to his portrayal, capturing the messy complexities of human life. Despite moments where you may feel compelled to intervene and shake some sense into Rudy, there remains an undeniable pull towards him, a testament to the authenticity of his portrayal. However, while Mancuso shares chemistry with both Camila Mendes and Francesca Reale, it somehow fails to resonate with me, leaving their interactions feeling somewhat disconnected or lacking in synergy.

The film Música has a tendency to leave viewers feeling somewhat perplexed. Through meticulous cinematography, Mancuso adeptly portrays the myriad of sounds that can disrupt Rudy during crucial conversations. The camera swiftly transitions between various auditory stimuli, from the rhythmic bounce of a basketball to the sharp clatter of utensils on plates. These diverse sounds serve to disorient both Rudy and the audience, immersing them in a cacophony that mirrors the character’s inner turmoil and challenges their ability to focus on the dialogue. As a result, the viewer may find themselves adrift in a sea of sensory overload, struggling to discern the significance of each noise amidst the chaos of Mancuso’s auditory tapestry.

It’s disheartening how scarce it has become to find romantic comedies that truly resonate with the heart. Nowadays, it seems the central conflicts introduced in such films are often contrived and lack genuine emotional depth. Take, for instance, the absurd premise of Rudy juggling two relationships simultaneously due to his inability to confront his feelings honestly – it simply fails to captivate. What I yearn for is a return to storytelling that delves into genuine love narratives or explores the journey of a musician discovering their path amidst life’s trials and triumphs. There’s a richness and authenticity in such narratives that is sorely missing in today’s cinematic landscape.

The dynamic between Rudy and his mother is truly heartwarming to witness. Observing the affectionate exchanges between them, especially the tender moments when Rudy interacts with his beloved puppets, evokes a sense of warmth and sweetness. However, these instances, albeit charming, are fleeting, leaving little room for a deeper exploration of the characters’ dynamics and chemistry. Consequently, the film falls short of providing sufficient depth to fully engage the audience. Despite its endearing moments, the overall experience leaves much to be desired, ultimately relegating it to the status of a mediocre one-time watch.

Música Review: Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Through the lens of Rudy Mancuso’s synesthetic world, the film navigates the complexities of love, family, and cultural identity with a charming touch. While Rudy’s journey to reconcile his passions and relationships is compelling, the film occasionally struggles to strike a harmonious balance between its musical spectacle and emotional depth, leaving the romantic aspect feeling somewhat underdeveloped. Nonetheless, Rudy Mancuso’s endearing portrayal and the heartwarming dynamics between characters, particularly with his mother, offer glimpses of genuine warmth and sweetness.
