Empowering Female Anime Characters: In anime, sometimes we come across characters who inspire us to be better and not be a pushover for society. They tell us just because we are women does not mean we need to stay trapped in predestined roles and we can venture out to experience other sides of life.
Thus, to celebrate this International Women’s Day, I decided to present some of my favourite female characters who are women-empowering icons. I tried my best not to give that many spoilers about the series.
Empowering Female Anime Characters You Must Know
Casca (Berserk)

When we talk about woman empowerment, no one is a better example than Casca. She literally carved her own path to success in a time and environment that was extremely hostile and dangerous towards females.
She goes through a traumatic childhood but still becomes a formidable fighter, renowned for her swordsmanship and leadership within the Band of the Hawk. And though she was in love with Griffith, she never let it get in the way of her duties and refused to be defined by her feelings towards him.
But Casca’s journey is one of immense struggle and personal growth, and it is just sad what a strong woman like her goes through later in the series.
Violet Evergarden (Violet Evergarden)

When Violet Evergarden aired, we all applauded the anime and KyoAni for the exceptionally beautiful animation. But the series is way more than just a visual treat. Violet stands as a powerful role model for women, offering a unique blend of strength, empathy, and maturation.
Her journey is not that of a traditional female protagonist, as she goes on a quest for self-discovery. The emotion of love also plays a major role in her life as she desperately tries to understand its true meaning.
Violet defies the typical “warrior woman” trope. While she possesses immense physical strength, she also can craft letters that convey the deepest feelings of individuals.
Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon)

Sailor Moon is an icon for many girls who learned from her they can also be a hero. She is special because she doesn’t shy away from her emotions. We also see her display vulnerability and express her doubts and fears. However, this openness doesn’t mean weakness.
Instead, it highlights the strength it takes to be sincere and genuine, even in moments of difficulty.
Sailor Moon’s power also is not just about being a magical girl. But the unwavering support and friendship Usagi receives from her fellow Sailor Guardians is her real strength.
Akane Tsunemori (Psycho-Pass)

Unlike many characters who simply follow orders, Akane is driven by a powerful moral compass. She questions the ruthless efficiency of the Sibyl System, the very foundation of her society, and fights for what she believes to be right.
Akane is also not just a pretty face. She possesses a sharp intellect and superior analytical skills. This is apparent in her ability to dissect the complexities of the Sybil System and formulate strategic plans.
But the best part is that, while navigating the harsh realities of her dystopian world, Akane never loses sight of her humanity.
Clare (Claymore)

Clare exists in a vicious world where Claymores, half-human and half-Yoma warriors, are ostracized and used as disposable tools. Despite this, she shows us some outstanding sword skills, honed through years of relentless training and brutal combat.
Sadly, even after Claymores do so much for other’s safety, they face constant societal prejudice and are treated as expendable weapons. Clare, however, persists despite the stigma and discrimination.
We also see her form deep bonds with her fellow Claymores and even create a special attachment with Raki, a young boy she saved.
Emma (The Promised Neverland)

Emma is no damsel in distress, as she leads the fight for freedom from her seemingly idyllic orphanage. Her unwavering optimism and determination inspire her fellow orphans to deny their tragic fate as well.
She also has a sharp mind and utilizes strategic planning to outwit the adults. This is because pulling off such a massive escape plan without leaving anyone behind is a feat that no one could achieve with just brute force.
Thus, she really does inspire all of us to rebel against our shitty fate and choose a path for our own self.
