The Fall of the House of Usher Trailer: Carla Gugino is the Ravenous Ghost of Past Secrets Haunting the Usher Dynasty

Revealed on September 12, 2023, The Fall of the House of Usher trailer marks the beginning of a new era of horror for Netflix. With Carla Gugino at the centre of the tragedies that are about to unleash their havoc on the Usher dynasty, the upcoming gothic horror drama promises to be a chilling account of past secrets and hauntings, all based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe and his other collection of works as well.

Created by Mike Flanagan, the new Netflix series stars Bruce Greenwood as Roderick Usher and Mary McDonnell as Madeline Usher in lead roles. Together, these twins have put in years of corrupt hard work to build Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an upstanding empire of wealth, privilege and power. But their affluent peace comes to a standstill when secrets from their past come to the top, and the heirs of their dynasty are targeted one by one by a mysterious woman from the elder Ushers’ past.

The trailer doesn’t fully reveal the true manifestation of Gugino’s character. It leaves you wondering if she’s an actual person from the past who’s come back to exact revenge on the Usher family, or if she’s the ghost of one. The only thing that the official trailer actually links her existence to is the common physical association with the vision of a raven, a bird that has often been represented as a symbol of darkness throughout films, shows and even literature.

When the Usher family sits down together, mostly making it all look like a business proposition, the event is soon followed by Roderick Usher being haunted by the memory of Gugino’s character, as she gets into the intricate details of his family, which, as she claims, is made up of nothing but “stunted hearts”. A montage of his extended family plays out as their dysfunctional antics and characters are brought to the front. And it seems like the clock is running out on all of them.

Carla continues to torment them all as Roderick is finally pushed to address the falling family size issue at hand. A new investigation also charts out to figure out what exactly is plaguing their lives, and it’s no accident, but a full-fledged planned attack by someone who knows everything there is to know about the Usher dynasty and its privileged rise to the sky.

Nobody is safe, and it ultimately drives the Usher twins to the edge to put it all to an end to save the surviving members of their family. And so kicks in Roderick’s incessant repetition of the word “Nevermore”, the in-depth explanation to which will be revealed to us when the series debuts on the streamer. Stay tuned for the horrors coming ahead!
