Is Mathagam Season 2 Needed? What to Expect from the Tamil Crime Series Next?

Fans have been wondering if Mathagam Season 2 will happen after the Tamil crime series recently wrapped its first part on an engaging note. The web show which released on Hotstar has been directed by Prasanth Murugesan who had previously helmed works such as Kidaari and Queen. The show also marked the streaming show debut for actor Atharvaa who plays the lead role of police officer Ashwath in it.

The show consisting of five episodes also starred Manikandan as the lead antagonist Padalam Sekar. With a supporting cast including more popular faces such as Nikhila Vimal, Dilnaz Irani, Ilavarasu, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Divyadarshini, the show promised some amazing performances. The crime thriller series had already created a buzz ahead of its release but following the cliffhanger ending of Season 1, fans are now intrigued about the show’s return and what will happen next if the story continues.

What Happened in Mathagam Hotstar Series Season 1?

The gripping Tamil series follows IPS officer Ashwath (Atharvaa) who gets a chance to uncover a crime syndicate led by one of the most-wanted criminals in Chennai. As crime lord Padalam Sekar (Manikandan) gears up to host an event in the city and invites all the underworld bigwigs to it, a tip-off about the same is received by Ashwath who begins an operation to set up a crackdown at the event.

The story consists of several twists and turns as the cat-and-mouse chase begins between the police and the crime syndicate. In the final episode, the day of the siege arrives as Ashwath and his team are stationed near the Padalam’s gathering venue. The crucial moment of the face-off between the two is then left to the very last moment, thus leaving fans with a cliffhanger ending.

Is Mathagam Season 2 Needed?

While the first season helps set up the story and the characters of the show, the main operation around which the plot is based only reaches the point of its beginning in Season 1. The second season is needed to explore whether Ashwath and his team succeed in nabbing Padalam and his gangster guests.

The last episode of the first season ended with Ashwath and Padalman pointing guns on their opposite sides in different frames, it leaves fans wondering whether a shootout takes place next and if either of the lead or supporting characters will get injured amid this skirmish.

Mathagam Season 2 Predictions, Release Date

As per reports, the Tamil series has been renewed for a second season and it is expected to be released in January 2024. While the wait for the next season will be long, it is expected that season two will promise an even more exciting storyline. There is a possibility that Ashwath’s operation may partially succeed and while his team may catch a hold of some of the other gangsters introduced in Season 1, the big fish, Padalam may escape and the next season could follow Ashwath trying to chase him again.

Another element that will have to be fleshed out in the second season would be the reason why Padalam gathered all the underworld members together at the party. The agenda of their meeting was kept a secret and it is expected that Season 2 will reveal the big plans that Padalam has and the reason why he requires co-operation from all the other rowdies.

Among the sub-plots that will also make it to the second season include a deeper look at Ashwath’s personal life which has been going through a rough patch since his wife is dealing with post-partum depression. Also, the first season briefly touched upon Padalam’s love story with Safi (Dhivyadharshini) and it could make for an interesting point to delve into the new season as well to show us the other side of the antagonist.
