Do Gubbare Review (Episode 1-2): The Sweetness of Familiar Feelings in an Unfamiliar Neighbourhood

Do Gubbare Review (Episode 1-2): In a time when everyone is breaking their heads over thrillers, and wondering who the culprit is, a feel-good show showcasing people like ourselves living regular lives, and their daily routines, is a breath of fresh air. JioCinema’s new Hindi show, featuring Mohan Agashe and Siddharth Shaw in the lead roles, is just that.

Do Gubbare has been directed by Varun Narvekar, who has also written the story. The screenplay and dialogues have been written by Kalyani Pandit and Varun. The show has been produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Ranjit Gugle.

Do Gubbare Review (Episode 1-2): Plot

Rohit shifts from Indore to Pune, where his girlfriend Manu lives. He has a new job, a new room and a new landlord Azoba who, many might agree, is a rare find. He is very friendly and witty but has rules that Rohit would better keep in mind. In fear of what he might say or think, Rohit doesn’t tell him about Manu but that he has some distant relative who lives in Pune but not nearby, (who is probably going to serve as his local guardian).

There is also Radha, the housekeeper, whose meals Rohit better eat without complaints, but she too is friendly; like the quintessential sweet yet strict “didi” who keeps the room of every bachelor, or bachelors, from turning into a godown. How Rohit fits in this new place with those who are going to be his new family is what the show is all about.

Do Gubbare Episode 1 Review

While appearing strict at first, Rohit’s new landlord Azoba is a stark contrast to the image of landlords that you and I have in our minds. He is aged, yes, but there is a youth in him that makes him “cool” (for the lack of a better word) and understanding. His wife passed away 6 months ago, and he will leave for California, where his son lives with his family, in a year. So Rohit will be his new company for a year now.

Like any other bachelor in a new city, Rohit’s first intention is to find places where he can eat. But for Azoba, reviews in food ordering apps are futile as one should review his or her food and not go by how someone else finds it.  He suggests Rohit tiffin services around the neighbourhood, where he will find great food.

Do Gubbare Episode 1 ends with Manu arriving to meet Rohit and Azoba, realising with a smile that she is the “distant relative” that Rohit mentioned to him earlier. The first episode smoothly manages to establish the characters without making us wonder about who they are and their pasts. And rightfully so, because that’s not what the show is about. Every day is a new chapter, and the show seems to tell us that we, too, should try to be more receptive to the present than the past or future.

Do Gubbare Episode 2 Review

Azoba gets frank with Manu, although Rohit is yet to normalise for himself the fact that his landlord now knows about his girlfriend. He joins his new job and makes new friends. Back at home, he meets Radha, who is also very agreeable and nice. She and Rohit’s mom have found a mutual topic to talk about; Rohit and his cooking skills are rather good, especially for Azoba, who finds it very tasty. Episode 2 ends with Rohit making a new aquarium for a kid Aarav who is looking for a new place for his gold fishes.

Do Gubbare Episode 2 explores the second part of Rohit’s new phase of life i.e. cooking, which is also the second part is any bachelor’s life in a new city. He not only knows how to cook but to cook with love which many of us would agree is a necessary ingredient in cooking, especially in Indian kitchens. The final addition comes in the form of Aarav, a naughty and sweet kid, in whom Rohit has found a brother, it seems. So Rohit’s new family seems complete. He has a father figure, a mother figure and a brother figure.

Do Gubbare Review (Episode 1-2): Final Thoughts

Do Gubbare manage gto slow me down during its duration. I stopped wondering about everything else and was just happy to see Rohit getting along in a new place with Azoba and Radha. I didn’t think about what was going to happen later but was just going with the flow of every scene. I just wanted to be a part of that world which is new and yet familiar. As far as the characters are concerned, Mohan Agashe is a treat to watch. The maturity, as well as the innocence he brings to his role, is very palpable. Siddharth Shaw, too manages to keep up by being a nice guy who is slowly learning the ways of his new world.

The story of two people, with a gap of two generations in between, finding new companions in each other, has got me hooked. To move to a different city is hard, and what I would not give to have a landlord like Azobda who helps me learn the ways of the new place rather than reminding me about my rent. A very sweet show that I know will get even sweeter without spoiling the flavour. But as Azoba said, in order to review it, you need to taste it first.

The first episodes of Do Gubbare are streaming on JioCinema.
