Unknown Killer Robots review

Last week’s Unknown entry was about pyramids, and it was truly quite an interesting watch. The thought of entire civilisations and perfectly-preserved bodies and other interesting artefacts being unearthed from the earth is both fascinating and mind-boggling. This week, the title Killer Robots might catch a lot of people’s eyes.

However, we are only talking about AI, something that we have begun to see slowly take over different tasks throughout the world and will be applied more so in the future. The docufilm is about using AI in warfare, the latter an already harrowing and heartbreaking situation that the world finds itself in. We follow several scientists who discuss with wonder and pride how these advancements will help save lives and make warfare easy for the most part. Of course, if you’re not on the side of getting a bomb dropped on you.

The scientists make it a point to mention that the AI of the real world is nothing like what we see in Hollywood. It’s not Terminator, at the end of the day. However, what we see after that is nothing short of Hollywood – sure, a gun-wielding robot isn’t murdering other people and robots… yet. But it’s not really far off that that, too, becomes a reality. Thus, also from Hollywood, it’s a very scary and grim thought that probably might make the viewer uncomfortable, although the researchers don’t seem to share the same sentiment as us.

Unknown Killer Robots review

The thought of Artificial Intelligence being able to think, make decisions and adapt and learn for themselves might be exciting for those who are making these discoveries, but for common people who are at the receiving end of such amazing technological advancements, it might not all be roses and butterflies. Just like how self-driving/AI-driven cars cause horrible accidents or go up in flames, the reality of complexities might just not be worth it. Food for thought.

Unlike the last episode, Unknown Killer Robots seems cold and distant, and the potential of these discoveries, although quite interesting, has more real-world consequences than finding a mummy in a tomb. This episode is scary but doesn’t reel you in with its fact and figures. If anything, I felt a little put off by everything I was seeing and the rather cavalier tone in which people were discussing these really dangerous inventions, honestly. I mean, sure, it’s always amazing to discover something new, but it doesn’t feel funny when you discover chemical weaponry with the help of AI that can murder people in the blink of an eye, regardless of who is making the discovery, you know?

That being said, thankfully, the series does bring these concerns forth and isn’t just about how great AI is and that it can now decide to murder human beings of its “own free will”. The series does address these concerns, but, honestly, it never does stick, and you only see a bleak future where AI might just have the power to destroy human civilisation. Fortunately or unfortunately, you can’t look away from these strange machines as they slowly beat out their human counterparts!

Unknown Killer Robots review

Unknown: Killer Robots is definitely a very interesting watch that gives us several different perspectives to look at as we descend into the madness that is AI and machine learning. However, it still doesn’t take away from this nagging fear in the back of our heads surrounding how bad it can all just get in the blink of an eye. Although the future might just turn out to be the complete opposite, it is perhaps this uncertainty that is just so scary and intimidating, at the end of the day.
