Netflix is back with yet another Japanese thriller in the film The Village, also known as ヴィレッジ. All of the films that come from Asia have a quality that is unparalleled by any other kind of film industry. Their visuals are gritty and saturated, their stories well-fleshed out, and their characters impeccably layered. The aforementioned incredibly intense and provocative film is directed by Michihito Fujii, who also joins the crew as the writer, while Michiaki Tsunoda and Ryô Yukizane join the crew as producers. Tomoyuki Kawakami serves as the cinematographer in this 120-minute thriller.

This film stars Ryûsei Yokohama, Arata Furuta, Wataru Ichinose, Hana Kino, Haru Kuroki, Shidô Nakamura, Naomi Nishida, Daijen Okudaira, Ryûto Sakuma and Tetta Sugimoto, alongside other cast members.
The Village Plot/Synopsis
Set in a perfectly dystopic village that blends modernity and incivility in the same space, this film is about a man trying to make his way in the place while dealing with questions about his identity. However, when you’re the son of a criminal, things automatically become incredibly difficult for you. Even if you were on the top of the mountain, coming down from that kind of high wanes into something dark and sinister. This is his chance to turn things around, to be better than whatever he was handed before.
But, this village is created on rotten foundations and on ideologies that border on cruel. People all make their way in a line to an unknown location, wearing masks that conceal their feelings. They only want submission and control. Things are falling apart, people are dying, and everyone is myopic about the changes happening in this place. Their world constantly spirals down the drain, and their denial bursts out open, not letting anyone accept the atrocities going on there.
There is some deeper cult-like behaviour going on in this village, and clearly, no one has brought this up earlier because there is a lot of suspicion about this narrative. However, as much as this sounds like dystopia, it is very much borrowed from our own lives and our own societies. Things go incredibly wrong here, and no one cares.
