Teenage dramas are the perfect mix of cringy and lovable, making them irresistible to watch. The following movies and shows like Never Have I Ever, will give you some closure now that the critically praised show is coming to an end. Sometimes they are acclaimed pieces of art following people who go through relatable experiences, and sometimes, they are so exaggerated that we’re happy it only exists on screen. While the aforementioned follows a flawed but rootable main character, some of the characters in the following movies and shows are so unlikable that we cannot help but love to hate them.

The Half of It

When a cute boy asks you to write a love letter for someone, it only evokes feelings of unrequited love and affection. For the main character Ellie Chu, that is not the same. She isn’t even interested in men, which makes this movie so interesting. It is a queer romance and one with some relatable explorations of what it is like to be queer and from a small town. Moreover, the fear, anxiety, angst and general sense of doom perfectly encapsulate the adolescent experience.

Starring Leah Lewis, Alexxis Lemire and Daniel Diemer, this film manages to bring sweet puppy love to a new kind of character dynamic.

Heartbreak High

Friendship, heartbreak, betrayal and raunchy reveals plague this high school drama series starring Ayesha Madon, Chloé Hayden and Thomas Weatherall. Completely reflecting a modern high school, this Australian follows the experiences of queer and cishet students in the school. However, the plot follows a map of sexual exploits that becomes public, thanks to a highly descriptive map. Consequently, all the students mentioned in the map must attend a sexual education course. If that isn’t enough to invite drama and tension, then this writer cannot compete.

Boo Bitch

The aspect that high school might be the only experience they can peak at is accurate for a lot of people but not for Erika, played by Lana Condor. Because one day, she gets into an accident and loses her life. Coming back as a ghost, Erika lives her life to the fullest because she can stick around if she’s more famous in death than she is in life. But when close friends like Gia, played by Zoe Colletti, come into the mix, will she really put popularity over her friends? Main character syndrome max, with a side of supernaturalism, makes this limited series incredibly fun to watch.

Moxie

Misogynists don’t come in a specific shape and size because, at this school, he is a good-looking jock everyone follows like a puppy. Combating this will not be fun, but it will be incredibly satisfying. After finding her mother’s old high school stuff, this girl takes up her own initiative. She starts a secret, illegal feminist magazine where she rallies all the students in school to revolt against the sexist system. However, she loses the people she loves and herself in the anger that comes with this crusade.

It is a perfect exploration of how we think of feminism and how this righteous anger can be all-consuming. But the main character carries the syndrome with grace and doesn’t make us hate her.

Do Revenge

Credited with bringing back the golden age of teenage dramas, this movie follows two girls who decide to do each other’s revenge after someone critically wrongs them. They cause havoc in the whole school and create such an untouchable reputation at their institution that people are afraid to mess with them. Amid all this revenge, the two of them manage to find love, but their relationship sours when something goes incredibly wrong. The question is not whether they get revenge but whether they get to come back to each other after this long stint of betrayal.

This is such a brilliant movie, and all the praise people have for it is so valid because of the way the plot is constructed. The characters, played by Camila Mendes, Maya Hawke and Austin Abrams, subvert popular tropes and are so self-aware of the same that it makes the movie even better than it already is.
