Aqua Oshi no Ko Episode 6

Do you know who Hana Kimura was? She was a 21 Year-old Pro Wrestler who was part of a Japanese reality show called “Terrace House”. The show involved bringing guys and girls together, not giving them much direction and hoping that whatever they end up doing is good enough to air. The show’s low-key nature and realism due to a lack of scripting, unlike most other reality shows, did cause it to gain a lot of popularity. If the concept seems similar to you, it is because Oshi no Ko is directly parodying it in the previous episode and this one.

Terrace House isn’t on the air anymore, all because of Hana Kimura. You see, she made a small mistake when she was a part of the show’s cast – she appeared to be mean to people and didn’t hold back while trying to pretend to be someone else. For this crime, she was ruthlessly and mercilessly mocked and bullied on the internet. Being very young and unable to take extreme levels of criticism very well, Hana chose to avoid the criticism by doing the one thing that would definitively end it. Hana Kimura chose to take her own life.

Why bring this up here? The death of a young woman who undoubtedly didn’t deserve her fate is a sad story, but what is its relevance to Oshi no Ko or this review? Well, if you’ve already watched the episode, you know where this applies. If you haven’t, you should get started as soon as possible. Oshi no Ko Episode 6 was a very well-done outing, especially because of how real it was and how well it portrayed shows, audiences, and their extremely unhealthy relationship with the characters portrayed.

We are somewhat approaching the “too real” territory for Oshi no Ko. In the middle of this episode, I found myself wondering that while what was going on was perfectly fine, the show’s portrayal of a reality show like that was too realistic to be entertaining to those who don’t watch that kind of stuff. Aqua had designated himself to be the outsider from the beginning and, as such, did not interfere with things as they happened here. Perhaps he should have because what happened wasn’t fun despite being realistic.

The portrayal of all these personalities in the show and how none of them were really bad and just trying to make a name for themselves was great and extremely similar to how things operate in real life. The show weaved a great narrative, focusing on a new character entirely and seeing how bad life treated her just for making a small mistake. Humanity can be extraordinarily cruel when we think no one is looking at us, and Oshi no Ko Episode 6 did a great job of representing that. As an ending note, the biggest harasser of Hana Kimura, when taken in front of the court, was fined 80$ and let go.

Verdict

Oshi no Ko Episode 6 wasn’t a very fun watch, but it wasn’t meant to be. It was created to portray a very ugly portrayal of humanity and anonymity, and it was very successful in doing that. Too successful.
