Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2 Ending Explained: Did Kate Beat Cancer?

After waiting for months, Firefly Lane‘s finale dropped, but it also came with an unexpected climax. Directed by Maggie Friedman and starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke in the lead, Firefly Lane is a series that narrates two best friends growing old together. While the comforting series had its ups and downs, Firefly Lane season 2 part 2 ending explained shows that it came with the best wind-up of a series that could possibly be there. Let’s check out what happened at the last and bid farewell to the series.

Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2 Ending Explained

After the friends split up and try to live a new life, Kate encounters cancer, and the first person who comes to her mind is Tully. Since Tully is in Antarctica, she couldn’t receive Kate’s call. This makes Kate believe that Tully is punishing her. However, right on time, Tully visits Kate after receiving all of Kate’s voicemails. Tully learns about Kate’s breast cancer, and the two start their healing journey together.

Various events take place during Kate’s chemotherapy. Firstly she feels suffocated since everyone around her except Tully looks with pity at her. Secondly, she worries about her daughter Marah’s future. Thirdly, her dream of marrying Johnny again hangs on the cliff. However, after successful surgery, Kate fights off cancer, and life becomes bright once again.

On the other hand, Tully is falling in love with Danny, but he is currently taken. When Danny seeks Tully’s advice on marriage, the latter asks him not to miss out on the opportunity. Nevertheless, Tully wishes he will love her back but also tries to keep her cool. After spending more and more time with Danny, she decides to confess to him, but right then, his girlfriend Celeste tells Tully that Danny proposed a wedding. And Tully’s love story goes back into the ocean again.

Now that Kate’s back on track, all the family members and friends decide to arrange her wedding with Johnny. When preparations go smoothly, Kate receives a call from the doctor who informs her that her cancer has returned. A devastated Kate hides this information from everyone since she wishes to proceed with her marriage happily. Somehow, Johnny finds the truth after Kate collapses. Shortly after, Tully also figures out the truth. Tully, scared of losing her best friend, tries to use her influence to get her into surgical trials.

Thankfully with the help of Danny, Mayo Clinic accepts Kate for their trial. But unfortunately, the doctors announce that Kate’s cancer has spread to her brain, meaning it’s critical. Kate, who realises her fate starts to enjoy each of her days. She fulfils all her bucket lists, plans her funeral beforehand, hangs out with her people, and also writes a novel.

Kate and Tully then visit their childhood place and look at the lake while sharing their memories. Kate peacefully stares at the lake as her beautiful moments with all her loved ones rush into her mind. When Tully returns to the balcony where Kate’s watching the vista, Tully finds that Kate has passed away.

During the funeral, Tully hesitates to go inside Kate’s home. Johnny says that Kate knew that Tully won’t come inside and that she prepared a gift for her. Tully sits on a bench and opens the box that contains a letter where Kate states that anytime she misses her, the novel will remind her. Then we see Tully picking up a manuscript titled “Firefly Lane” and realising that the story Kate wrote is about them both.

Finally, Tully wears the iPod with the song Kate installed for her friend to listen to. Tully dances happily as she firmly believes that Kate’s always with her.
