Divorce Attorney Shin Episode 5 continues attorney June’s quest to join Shin Sung-han’s office but only ends up infuriating him more. Meanwhile, Hyeong-geun is not able to come to a conclusion about his marriage.

Episode 5 starts off at the same place where it left off last week. Choi June put up the deal that he will delete the Youtube video if he hires him. This leaves Sung-han flabbergasted & all the more infuriated by him. He even beats him up & Hyeong-geun has to mediate between them. They come to the conclusion that if he deletes the video, Sung-han will give him a chance.
A new divorce case also comes up in the episode. Previously, we saw two ladies fighting over a man, where the girlfriend of the man asks the wife to divorce him. But the wife refuses & leaves. Today the girlfriend & the man walks into Sung-han’s office for a consultation, for which he asks Lee Seo-jin to sit along as consultation coordinator.
The couple wants the attorney to prove that they are having an affair & get a divorce finalised. But it isn’t a shallow case as it seems. The man, Professor Choi, is apparently suffering from liver cancer & needs a liver transplant to live. But his wife refuses to help, while the girlfriend wants to, she can’t donate without being related to the man. That’s why they need to get married.
The wife apparently is waiting for Mr Choi to die so that she can get all the insurance money & even in the present she is seen demanding him exorbitant amount of money for various things. Sung-han thinks of it as a mind boggling case and asks for time to consider whether he will take it or not.

In his personal life, Sung-han is excited to have his nephew over for the weekend but he gets to know that Gi-yeong will go back the same day at 9 PM. When he asks for the reason he gets to know that Gi-yeong’s paternal grandmother is coming from the US, that’s why he has to go back home early. After spending time playing games & eating snacks, Gi-yeong goes back to mentioned time.
We also get a flashback of his sis Ju-hwa’s wedding day where he gets to meet the grandmother aka Ju-hwa’s mother-in-law & asks her to take care of his sister. He shares that his sister is kind-hearted but the grandmother laughs over it & says that kindness is a weakness, which leaves both of the siblings confused.
Meanwhile, we had suspicions about Choi June being a spy for Park Yu-seok & might have come to Sung-han with ulterior motives. But it turns out he is getting blackmailed by Yu-seok as well, who threatens him to do the spy work for him or his resignation will not be processed because he knows their secret (did the spying for Park Ae-ran’s case) & will tell it to Sung-han.
Concerned June is found sitting in a Park by Hyeong-geun, who himself was contemplating his complicated married life. He listens to June’s concern & even shares Sung-han’s issue with Keum-hwa law firm but it’s not revealed to us. They take this to Sung-han carefully, thinking that he might get furious but rather he coolly asks him to do the spy work & get money for it even. So that they can have team dinners with that.
Apart from him, Lee Seo-jin also gets startled in the office when she receives flowers from Jeong-sik. The unsolicited flowers make her uncomfortable as she can’t see with what motives in mind they are giving her flowers & she doesn’t want to be recognised for time being. She ends up giving them to the noodle shop owner when Sung-han & Hyeong-sik were having lunch.
On knowing about it, they give an earful to Jeong-sik for making her uncomfortable. Hyeong-geun while already having a hard time, gets a call from Ji-eun while she was having a medical emergency. He gets driven by the noodle shop owner as he had wine with dinner & even gets to meet the guy his wife was living with.
This encounter makes him all the more emotional but a phone call with Sung-han, brings him back to his apartment. There the three friends listen to his ordeal & funnily enough lift up his mood as well. The whole scene between them was heartwarming and funny to watch & truly felt like a conversation between close friends.
Finally, we also see the grandmother being picked up from the airport but there’s also a young boy who goes straight to Sung-han’s office after landing. He turns out to be Professor Choi’s son who wants to help his dad by donating his own liver to him. He wishes that his parents can get separated and also stop sending him abroad.
Influenced by Choi Min-su’s thoughts, Sung-han decides to take up the case & visits Mr Choi to tell him that to win he needs to do two things. Firstly, he needs to cancel all the insurance & secondly he might become a criminal in the meanwhile, so he has to be ready to face some consequences. Lastly, we see Seo-jin making peace with her emotions & when she sees the same flowers on her desk, she doesn’t feel uncomfortable.
Summing Up: Divorce Attorney Shin Episode 5
It was a light episode which explored the emotions & psyche of the characters, especially Seo-jin who has been through a lot. The bonding scene between the trio was my absolute favourite. But with almost in the middle of the series, I hope we get to know more about Sung-han & the past that haunts him.
