Shotgun Wedding Review: Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel Star in an Unsatisfying Watch

Shotgun Wedding is an action-comedy film directed by Jason Moore and stars Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Coolidge, Sonia Braga, Cheech Marin and D’Arcy Carden, alongside other cast members. The film has a runtime of 100 minutes.

Prime Video describes the movie as:

Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) gather their families for the ultimate destination wedding but when the entire party is taken hostage, “’Til Death Do Us Part” takes on a whole new meaning in this hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure as Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones—if they don’t kill each other first.

Jennifer Lopez’s action-comedy entertainer is quite goofy and surprisingly watchable. You’d expect this one to be another forgettable flick with similar themes to the hundreds of other movies that come out with similar themes, and, to some extent, it is that. However, it is still goofy and silly enough for a good time.

Shotgun Wedding is, by all means, a one-time watch. Honestly, it is amusing enough to be enjoyable, but there’s nothing new happening for us to be taken by surprise. It’s the same formula presented in a different way but not outlandish enough for us to take note of. If anything, the movie plays it safe with the story and never really crosses that line where you would be left speechless.

The movie also plays out some of its humorous moments for too long and makes Jennifer Lopez go on these rants at the most inopportune moments. Her character is annoying most of the time and leaves much to be desired as you expect her ‘strong independent woman’ persona to actually bear fruit in the way that she interacts with those around her and reacts to stressful situations.

The rants, I assume, are supposed to be funny but, more often than not, are annoying. Josh Duhamel is similarly sometimes rather annoying with his ‘cool dude’ moments, but the pair looks great together, and it’s a treat to watch two gorgeous people on-screen regardless of their character flaws. Jennifer Coolidge is another great addition to the cast list, and it’s always great to watch her.

Thanks to the annoying characters, however, you never really feel connected to the to-be-married couple as they constantly bicker in the face of death and danger. Other horrible issues, however, get solved a bit too easily, which shouldn’t be possible if you look at it logically. But then again, this isn’t the movie you put a lot of logic towards – you just sit back and watch the madness happen however it wants to.

In spite of its rather short runtime of 100 minutes, the movie never reaches any sort of interesting crescendo. If anything, the movie starts to drag after a while, and you start to check the clock, wondering when it will end. Sure, there are still some moments that will put a smile on your face, but they are few and quite far between. Lopez’s endless antics, on top of the stale plot, add another layer of annoyance that stays with you till the very end.

Summing Up: Shotgun Wedding

shotgun wedding

Shotgun Wedding, as mentioned earlier, is strictly a one-time watch that gives a few laughs periodically. Other than that, it’s annoying and flat and doesn’t let you form connections with the protagonists. Thank god for Jennifer Coolidge, though; she is primarily the one who brings in the laughs in the movie.

Shotgun Wedding is streaming on Lionsgate Play through Prime Video channels.
