Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible Episode 3 Review- Growing Some Legs

Okay, this was cute as hell. After an episode that demonstrated the show didn’t have the legs to go very far with this concept, it went and came out with the show’s best offering so far. This episode made me giddy while watching it, and I usually am not a big fan of involving kids in storylines. Most of that is due to trauma involving shows such as Made in Abyss, Clannad, and Kotaro Lives Alone. However, seeing as I’ve listed three absolutely phenomenal anime as an example, there must be something about this idea. The kids are indeed alright.

Seita, the younger sibling of the Shiraishi household, was an absolute pleasure to watch in this episode. He wasn’t in it for long, but he stole every frame he was in effortlessly. His interactions with Junta, his elder brother, and Nagisa, who spots them doing their brotherly thing in the park, were tremendous. Adorable would be the best way to put it, but he also managed to deepen the relationship between Nagisa and Junta while doing his own thing of being cute as a button.

I guess it was his influence over this episode that made me feel this way, but the show felt much more substantial this time around. The stories it told and the character development it featured felt much more robust. While they weren’t any more or less interesting in this episode, there was a thread tying them together, and there was a real passage of time while in the episode, giving a lot more weight to the events. This was more of a complete outing than episode 2.

The production of Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible isn’t stellar by any means, but it is more than enough to tell the kind of story it is telling. The comedic beats are captured very well with the change in character animation style, even though there aren’t as many jokes that hit. The music is also fairly good, even though most of it is forgotten as soon as it stops playing in your years. It is missing that one standout track that would raise it a level beyond, but there is still time for that.

Kubo and Shiraishi’s relationship also progressed greatly in Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible Episode 3, with some help from Nagisa’s sister and the conundrum Shiraishi’s adolescence led him towards. It was still very tame by anime standards, and some would say the show didn’t go far enough, but I don’t want that on my screen right after spending all that time with Seita. Shiraishi’s reactions were also exactly what you would want him to do in that situation, which was admirable. The Christmas segment at the end of the episode was also sweet, with a nice bow on the show’s best episode so far.
Verdict
Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible Episode 3 was absolutely lovely and very cute. The plot and character development took a second stage to an adorable little boy, and I’m all for it.
