Shanty Town Ending Explained

In Shanty Town, there are women who get exploited. A cult where women cannot leave even when they pay their debts. Where they have to stay there till their handler, Scar, decides. They are disposable and dispensable. Cue Inem aka Amanda. She is taking her sister’s place to get revenge on the people who have harassed her and abandoned her in jail for three years.

When she is out, Inem meets Ene, and she tells her that Scar owes her for abandoning her in prison. What Ene and Scar don’t know is that Inem is actually Amanda, who is an undercover agent attempting to blow up their entire operation.

At the time, many of the sex workers at Scar’s place were celebrating Jackie’s leave from the prostitution ring. Shalewa, looking at Jackie, also wants to do the same but the debt she has incurred is so high that there is no way she can do that.

Scar makes it known that he is the leader, and he decides what everyone owes them. But even above him is Chief Fernandez, who is gearing up for the Governor’s election and hoping to make a sweeping victory. In doing so, he asks his right hand, Scar, to destroy the truck so there are no crimes traced to him. Before he can do anything in that manner, he gets kidnapped and taken to a remote location where he comes face-to-face with his boss’ rival. She is ready to torpedo his entire life if it means that she can get the Governor job from Chief Fernandez.

Asking for ideas, Scar tells her that Chief has a ring that he wears everywhere, protecting him from any harm. If they got that ring, Chief would come running. However, the idea has been taking a while because the person he assigned this to, Shalewa, fell in love with the Chief’s son and doesn’t feel comfortable manipulating him into getting the ring.

During all this, Amanda has been put through some of the worst things possible, including but not limited to assault and gruesome violence. She puts all this behind her and looks into the safe where Scar has been hiding all his money and account books. Giving them to her superior officer, she walks back to the main part of town. Colorado tells her that she has been summoned.

Once she gets there, she is informed that someone has stolen Scar’s money. Obviously, Ene knows that it is Inem/Amanda but doesn’t say anything for fear of being shot or counter-accused. Instead, she throws someone else under the bus, and when the dollars are found in the guy’s bag, he is shot dead in the forehead. Amanda is taken aback and working more than ever to bring down Scar.

She tries her level best to stray away from sex work but has to go one day. She runs into Shalewa, who tells her that she is on a date with the Chief’s son, Femi. Inem/Amanda broaches the topic of the girls who did go ‘free’. Shalewa doesn’t seem to have a good reply except for this one voice note from her friend Jackie. It reveals that Jackie was actually killed before she could even get to Epe, the town she was leaving to.

This was a similar situation for a lot of the other women who were seemingly free from their debts. Noticing this, Amanda decides to end Scar once and for all. She asks Ene to help because she knows about these killings and ensures everyone in the ring is safe. Before she could do anything else, however, people had started raiding the restaurant Shalewa was at and kidnapping the couple to an undisclosed location.

There is a major confrontation with the Chief, the rival mafia and the police agents coming in. Chief Fernandez gets away unscathed, while others are left to fight amongst themselves. Femi gets arrested, and Scar goes back to his house, where he is killed by all the other sex workers in the ring.

Femi manages to make a deal with the police and gets the agents an invitation to the Chief’s governor’s ceremony. As the Chief plays the video, a video of his multiple affairs comes to the forefront. The agents storm in and arrest the Chief putting him in jail. The episode ends with a text card giving an epilogue of what happens after this. It seems that all the women are free now; they can choose to leave. Meanwhile, Ene has been arrested, and Scar’s body is nowhere to be found.

However, the end shows a cult-like circle around a fire, where the priest-like figure is chanting, and a person in a red robe slowly walks into the frame. The shot gets cut off here, and that is the end of the show. It is entirely possible that there might be a second season after the open-ended ending of this season. There are many unanswered questions, like what happens to Femi and Shalewa? Is Scar really dead? Does Ene go to prison? And finally, does this show to warrant a second season?
