The 1619 Project Trailer: Untold Story of Black Americans’ Contribution to the Nation

The trailer says it all, “The 1619 Project is not a history, it really is talking about America today” and the Black Americans’ claim to the nation’s flag. Developed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Nikole Hannah-Jones, the upcoming 6-part docuseries will be dropping on Hulu this January. It follows her long-form initiative that begun in August 2019, marking the “400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery”.

The official description of the endeavour laid out by NY Times states that Hannah-Jones began working on this project to “reframe the country’s history”, thus pitting the aftermath of slavery at the centre of it, and according the Black Americans with a contributive agency in the formulation of the US narrative. This anthology of essays and poetic works was published by the New York Times Magazine in 2019, and then again found a place in the book expansion for the same in 2021.

A still from the trailer.

Presenting an alternative route from the mainstream of chronicling the nation’s historical accounts, The 1619 Project brings us back to the roots of the legacy left behind by slavery. The visual translation of the anthology is directed by Academy Award-winning director Roger Ross Williams and will focus on how the Black Americans are synonymous with the notion of American freedom. The fight for freedom is still very much on, and the forthcoming documentary will break down the roles played by various themes like “Democracy”, “Race”, “Music”, “Capitalism”, “Fear” and “Justice” (which will also be the titles of the six episodes, directly inspired from the essays) in setting up the foundation of a people’s existence and collective identity.

Hulu details the synopsis of the series as, “Hulu’s six-part Docuseries is an expansion of The 1619 Project created by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and the New York Times Magazine. The series seeks to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative”
