Lee Soo Man The King of K-Pop: New Amazon Prime Video Documentary About SM Founder Coming Soon

A new feature documentary, Lee Soo Man The King of K-pop, will shed light on the Kpop mogul who founded SM Entertainment in 1989 (rebranded in 1995), a pioneering company that led the Korean Wave with artists like BoA, H.O.T. and others. Production company This Machine has already put the project underway, with the documentary being digitally released via Prime Video across 240 countries worldwide.

The long list of producers working on the deal include This Machine’s Ting Poo, Jenny Turner, This Machine’s R.J. Cutler, Jane Cha Cutler, Elise Pearlstein, Trevor Smith, and Teddy Zee. Amazon Studio’s incharge of documentary releases, Brianna Oh, added “We are thrilled to reunite with Ting Poo to capture Lee Soo Man’s dynamic career and undeniable influence on K-Pop and the music industry as a whole.”

The exclusive report was delivered by Deadline and the South Korean online platform Naver. While no confirmed release date has been announced for the premiere yet, filmmaker Ting Poo described the Kpop trailblazer as “a modern-day Willy Wonka whose story will resonate with dreamers everywhere” and “A futurist and visionary on the scale of Steve Jobs”.

Various artists and Kpop groups like TVXQ, SHINee, Girls’ Generation, EXO, NCT, Red Velvet, Vespa and more function under SM’s banner. Additionally, Ting Poo has previously been credited for co-directing the 2021 documentary on Val Kilmer, titled Val, and for editing the the Oscar-winning Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405.

The feature is set to emotionally move the viewers upon its release and put the SM founder in the spotlight yet again. Except being known for his contribution to the the multinational entertainment agency, Lee Soo Man, “the president of culture”, also made his singing debut in 1972.
