Shantaram Episode 7 Review: Loyalty, Conscience and the New Debt

Shantaram Episode 7 finds the people of Sagar Wada amidst a Cholera epidemic that forces Lin to make some moralistic compromises. The latest instalment of the drama series is directed by Ian B MacDonald and has a running time of forty-seven minutes. For the unversed, the Apple TV show revolves around an Australian fugitive Lindsay Ford, played by Charlie Hunnam, who escapes to Bombay during the eighties.

The complete cast of the show includes Alexander Siddig as Abdel Khader Khan, Shubham Saraf as Prabhu, Luke Pasqualino as Maurizio, Elektra Kilbey as Lisa Carter, Alyy Khan as Qasim Ali, Matthew Joseph as Ravi, Sujaya Dasgupta as Kavita, Antonia Desplat as Karla, and Fayssal Bazzi as Abdullah Taheri. Moreover, the latest episode is titled Apo Vai Pranah.

The episode resumes with Prabhu’s love interest Parvati, who fell unconscious in the theatre during the last instalment. It is revealed that it’s not just Parvati, but the entire Sagar Wada, that needs immediate medical assistance due to a Cholera outbreak. However, the only thing that’s near to a real doctor for them is Linbaba.

Lin, on the other hand, is convinced that without basic supplies like clean drinking water, the people of Sagar Wada won’t survive the epidemic. He is fed up with people dying on his conscience and decides to make a final moral compromise. Meanwhile, Khader Bhai learns a leveraging secret about the new minister and formulates a strategy that involves Madam Zhou and Karla.

The episode also features Lisa and Maurizio making a compromise for the brown sugar deal, which will definitely have an impact on their relationship. Even though Abdul has already delivered the lethal warning, the distinct couple seems to be missing the point anyways.

In the last episode, I had issues with the trajectory of the series (which went nowhere) and it’s zero revelations. But this time, I am completely overwhelmed with the progression. Nearly all the pieces of the puzzle are finally taking shape, and inching closer to the finish line. Including all the character arcs and developments, be it Prabhu, Lisa or Karla.

The episode further embarks on Khader Bhai’s association with Sagar Wada which will weaken the stake of other parties, and also involve Lin in the unfortunate aftermath. Moreover, there is also a looming wave of the pinfall, that is more likely to affect someone very close to the stuck fugitive.

I thoroughly enjoyed Prabhu’s Amitabh Bachchan references in the episodes, along with the hysterical enactment. Slowly and steadily the Jugaad-oriented guide is starting to become everyone’s favourite. Although something tells me that whenever we get attached to a character mid-season, it often ends on a terrible and tragic note.

The episode definitely makes up for the last instalment and brings back the intrigue ratio. Furthermore, it heightens the stake at Sagar Wada and seemingly invites new trouble for the residents.
