Tanaav Review: Same-Old Story is a Snooze Fest

Back with another TV show focusing on the issues in Kashmir, Tanaav rushes to stop a dangerous man previously thought to be dead. For those out there who don’t like slow-burn political thrillers, Tanaav is going to be a rather annoying watch as you wait for something fast-paced and exciting.

The action-thriller series has 12 episodes, each with a runtime of around 30-45 minutes. The series is the Hindi adaptation of the Israeli hit series Fauda.

Tanaav Review

Tanaav carefully orchestrates a heist and presents a situation that is complicated from almost all angles. Taking place in Kashmir, the series is almost a scene-for-scene copy for Fauda, which received international acclaim thanks to the pandemic and the lockdown.

Not getting into the original show, SonyLIV’s series is interesting and complicated, with several things happening together. However, if you’ve watched the original one, you’d find it difficult to understand the point of watching the same show in Hindi, considering you can simply watch the original on Netflix.

Anyway, Tanaav will be gripping for anyone with a fresh eye on the storyline, considering there are several moments that come out of the left field and some almost hits and misses that meander in shocking ways. There are several gripping moments in the series that will keep you engaged, and there’s great acting that sucks you right into the storyline.

But, as with all remakes, it doesn’t feel new or fresh. Since you already know what’s about to happen, it leaves you waiting for the next big thing that you already know is around the corner. Plus, the series has 12 episodes. I mean, come on – at 45 minutes per episode, it’s a bit much to sit through.

I say this because, after a while, Tanaav stretches itself too thin. Regardless of how macho Manav Vij tries to be, the series takes one small incident and stretches it for so long that you lose all interest in it. The story doesn’t give us anything new after a while, and even if you haven’t watched the Israeli version, you will find yourself checking how much is remaining of the runtime.

I think the problem is that Indian content is already chock-blocked with TV shows and movies that focus on similar situations and go down similar, if not the same, routes. We have seen these stories before, it’s not new for us to watch two warring sets of people try to one-up each other as they try to fulfil their own disturbing ideologies.

I think it would’ve been more enjoyable if, keeping the original somewhat intact, the series added newer elements that were edge-of-the-seat thrilling. The series misses out on keeping us engrossed by using tried and tested storylines. In the end, Tanaav leaves us feeling rather bored and ends up being predictable.

However, performances are strong throughout, and everyone does a great job of looking rough and tough as they try to thwart others’ disturbing plans. Unfortunately, with a series like this, there is a lot of swearing that sounds out of place and awkward, and the fight sequences look rather fake and forced.

Final Thoughts

Tanaav has some good moments that start to fade away from the middle point onwards. Its pace starts to falter, and the series seriously becomes a chore to watch. After a while, the crime-thriller series loses all steam and becomes the same-old story of revenge placed in Kashmir that we have seen several times around.

Tanaav is streaming on SonyLIV.
