Old People is a horror movie written and directed by Andy Fetscher and stars Melika Foroutan, Stephan Luca and Anna Unterberger, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 100 minutes.
Netflix describes the movie as:
A WOMAN WHO’S RETURNED HOME WITH HER TWO KIDS TO ATTEND HER SISTER’S WEDDING MUST SUDDENLY DEFEND THEIR LIVES AGAINST OLDER PEOPLE ON A KILLING SPREE.
Old People is a befuddling horror movie that confused me regarding what it wants us to feel – should I feel scared, or should I laugh? Although, to be fair, I didn’t feel too scared for the most part, it did make me laugh an ample number of times.
That being said, it is a horror movie at the end of the day, and like all horror movies, there are twists, turns and blood and more.
Andy Fetscher’s Old People follows Ella as she goes on a fun-filled vacation to her hometown for her sister’s wedding, only to come across hoards of the town’s old folks who just want one more night of bloody fun.
The film follows a linear storyline wherein Ella and her kids enjoy her sister’s wedding, only for the night to take a gruesome turn. As things get progressively worse, she and her ex-husband must defend themselves and their kids against these old people who want nothing more than to destroy everything and everyone.
Meaning Behind Old People

There is emotion behind the story of Old People, and although it doesn’t make much of an impact as a horror movie, the movie definitely has moments wherein you genuinely feel heartbroken for our murdering oldies.
The film brings the desperation of growing old and the fear of behind left behind in an ever-changing world. The old townspeople want the minimum living arrangements and want the respect that they should be given. However, will dwindling faculty and general disinterest, they have been reduced to nothing more than animals stuck in time inside a dirty care centre.
Old People wants us to honour our loved ones and make sure that they are cared for. As it constantly reminds us – we will one day take over the place of those to whom we don’t pay attention.
Of course, that doesn’t mean old people should murder everyone, but hey, gotta love horror movies.
Old People Ending Explained
In the end, after fighting off old people throughout the night and losing Lukas, Ella, Noah, and Laura escape down an old tunnel that leads up to another house on the property. Unfortunately, while struggling to go through the narrow passageways, Ella gets captured and eventually murdered, and the siblings are forced to rush out without her.
Now without either of their parents, Noah and Laura attempt to go down to the beach where Alex is waiting for them. However, when they try to get out of the house, they come across their grandfather Aike and another old man, who promptly tries to murder Laura. Facing the difficult sight of losing his granddaughter, Aike finally breaks through the daze and shoots the old man dead and the three of them eventually run to the beach to get on Alex’s boat.
There’s a moment where Alex hesitates to help Aike up the boat but eventually trusts him and helps him up. As Aike cuddles a traumatised Noah, Laura looks back at the beach to find all the old townsfolk looking at them from a distance.
Could the senseless murders have been stopped long before? Probably, only if the town’s youngsters paid a little more attention to their loved ones instead of abandoning them, forgotten in the old and decrepit halls of the care home.
Are the old people zombies? Not really, at least, not that it was mentioned. It’s just a combination of hurt, neglect and anger that makes the oldies lash out and take revenge. Once they are shown love, they come around to normalcy, as seen with Aike.
Old People is streaming on Netflix.
