Fate The Winx Saga Season 2 Review: The Fantasy Series Loses the Magic to Drama and Expositions

Fate The Winx Saga Season 2 is here and, the new season is filled with many new characters, drama and expositions, some more than the other, often taking the magic of the series away. The Netflix show is based on the fan-favourite Nickelodeon animated series Winx Club by Iginio Straffi.

Produced by Archery Pictures in association with Rainbow, Fate The Winx Saga is developed by Brian Young, who is also the showrunner and executive producer. Fate The Winx Saga Season 2: Too Much Is Happening!

Well, the first season of Fate The Winx Saga did not land well in the audience per se. Irrespective of that we have a season two here due to the excruciating cliffhanger ending of the first season that truly demanded a second shot at remaking the cult favourite animated series. And, although, season two does a fine job in really standing out as a YA piece, it truly lacks the conviction and essential narrative to thrill as a fantasy series.

In Fate The Winx Saga Season 2, we see that Rosalind is well and back, running Alfea. Andreas is back too and has taken Silva’s position as the Specialists’ mentor while Silva awaits trial. Bloom, Aisha, Musa, Stella and Terra are continuing their schooling at Alfea but, things are different and dangerous even. With Rosalind at arm’s length and Dowling’s death still a secret from the girls, the chaos is real.

It does not help that fairies have started to go missing since Rosalind joined as headmistress and has Beatrix as her nose everywhere. Sky and Sam are clearly not doing well but, Riven and Dane are really upping their game. So yes, some characters are on the wrong side of the mental health card whereas others are thriving in the new Alfea-ian world.

In the new season, the Burned Ones seem far gone but, does it mean that Bloom and her friends are safe? Surely not! A new shadow or, more like shadows, of danger are lurking around the corner and as the Winx suite members test these murky waters, things start to get out of hand for our brilliant fairies, especially for Bloom- who is the harbourer of the ancient Dragon Flame.

Fate The Winx Saga Season 2 starts off with a well-rounded up plot and good intentions. The subplots are interesting with a few being romantic and the other mysterious. However, somewhere down the line the show starts tricking us a lot and by the end, we have too much happened to really focus on the magic element of the show. The addition of the new characters such as Terra’s cousin- Flora, Aisha’s love interest- Grey and others don’t aid the situation.

There are too many expositions and revelations that take place in the second season whose timings are always offbeat. It drags the question of Bloom’s parents throughout without clearly leading us anywhere. It brings in the subplot of Blood Witches without giving us their proper origin story or motive. The villains switch every other moment and it is hard to keep track of who’s who.

Yet there is one thing that still continues to shine in the convulsions of the narrative- friendship and camaraderie. Especially the formations of new bonds including that of Musa and Riven, Stella and Beatrix and, even Flora and others to an extent. The individual character developments, however, lack depth. For instance, Bloom really seems cocky with her Dragon Flame throughout the season, repeating her capabilities all the time. Although she does it in goodwill, it becomes annoying after a point. Aisha’s romantic life really seems to be sidetracked and is only there to introduce Grey into the scene and Dane’s purpose in the show still remains a mystery.

Beatrix, who happens to be one of the strongest and most clever characters in the show gets the weirdest turns and, some sparks of friendship between Stella and Sky or Musa and Dane seemed so half-baked that you question why there were in the show in the first place.

Fate The Winx Saga Season 2: Final Verdict

Overall, Fate The Winx Saga Season 2 does a decent job when it comes to entertainment and world-building. It sure could have done better but, with the kind of ending we have for this season, it is imminent that there be a third season. It is very much possible that the third time’s the charm for this Netflix fantasy show.

  1. I watched winx saga (cartoons) with my daughter back in the days. And it became her favorite. So once this show was out in Netflix, we’re so excited. But watching the show was now, it was nothing like the original cartoon show. It’s not a kid friendly show. I hope if they change the storyline, I hope they should have maintain that it would be still a kid friendly show. Knowing kids loves this show growing up. It’s frustrating that they can’t watch they’re favorite show.
