The Empress Teaser: Follows the Life & Love of Princess Elisabeth and Emperor Franz

The Empress is an upcoming German romantic period drama, which will be coming to Netflix next month. A teaser of the series has been released which shows the early life of Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria and her romance with the Emperor of Austria. The series is written by Katharina Eyssen and Co-directed by Florian Cossen and Katrin Gebbe.

The official Netflix synopsis of the series reads, “In 1800s Austria, passionate and rebellious Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph face love under duress, intrigues and power struggles at the Viennese court.” When the rebellious Elisabeth meets Franz, the Emperor of Austria, the young couple’s intoxicating love completely upsets the power structure at the Viennese court.

After the wedding, the young empress must assert herself not only against her mother-in-law, the sovereign, power-hungry Sophie but also against Franz’s brother Maxi, who himself longs for the throne and for her. As enemy troops form up on the borders of the Habsburg Empire, people in Vienna rise up in protest against the emperor. Elisabeth must find out who she can trust and how high the price is to be a true empress and a figure of hope for the people.

The cast of the series includes Devrim Lingnau as Elisabeth von Wittlesbach, Philip Froissant as Franz Joseph, Melika Foroutan, Sevnja Jung as Louise, Johannes Nussbaum, Elisa Schlott, Jördis Triebel, Almila Bagriacik and Wiebke Puls.

In the teaser, we see Elizabeth (Sisi) standing in a white wedding dress with the background voice saying that she will never be an empress and will only ruin him. It sets the tone of what we should expect and how the two lovers will have to fight some battles before they can unite.

But will they have a happy ending or there’s more to come their way, even after their union? As the description below the teaser describes it, “Great love, a throne and an entire kingdom that looks up to her. But Elisabeth’s path is anything but easy, as she must fight her way to Franz through intrigue, etiquette and taboos.”
