Ms Marvel Episode 4 Recap

In Ms Marvel Episode 4, Kamala and her mother go to Pakistan to meet her grandmother Sana (Samina Ahmad). It’s a hearty reunion for Sana-Kamala and her mother, Muneeba. Sana talks to her granddaughter about Aisha, the importance of the bangles, the train and its importance. She tells Kamala that there must be a reason why they see the train visuals and have a connection with the bangle.

Later, Kamala heads out with her cousins to explore the market area. After her cousins leave her alone to meet their friends, she heads to the train station. Someone tries to attack Kamala at the station. But she uses her power to defend herself. We learn that the person trying to attack Kamala is Kareem, a member of the Red Daggers.

Kareem takes Kamala to Waleed (Farhan Akhtar). Waleed tells Kamala about Najma, the Clandestines and their realm. He says that if the Clandestines get the bangles, they will unleash terror on their world until it ceases to exist.

Sadly, Najma and her group of Djinn break free and come to Pakistan to find Kamala. Kareem and Kamala fight side by side against the Clandestines. Najma kills Waleed and tries to attack Kamala. However, Najma’s attempt and the bangles take Kamala back to the time of partition. Kamala is at the train station where thousands of people are trying to catch the train to Pakistan.

In Ms Marvel Episode 4, there’s a heartwarming moment shared between Muneeba and her mother, Sana. Sana believes that Muneeba left Pakistan to get away from her. Muneeba tells Sana that it was because of her crazy stories. Muneeba says she didn’t need those stories but her mother back then.

Ms Marvel Episode 4 Recap: Discussion

The new episode of Ms Marvel yet again packs enough desiness, spice and great punches. We hear Ali Sethi’s Pasoori playing in the background. Fawad Khan makes an appearance through a picture. There’s panipuri, desi aunties, unbothered cousins and delicious biryani. The show excels in showing what being a desi in a home country feels like. The fourth episode showing Pakistan is shot in Bangkok. While I have not visited the country, only someone residing there can know if the depiction was apt or not.

In another emotional sequence, Kamala’s grandmother Sana talks about her dilemma about who she truly is. She was born in India and had a Pakistani passport. Sana talks about the impact India and Pakistan’s partition had because of the Englishmen. It is one of the best scenes of the series so far. The pain, the loss and the sense of conflicted feelings of the people who directly dealt with the partition couldn’t be shown in a better way.

In terms of the story, we get some insight into the Clandestines and what will happen if they get the bangles. However, the makers have not yet made it clear why the bangles work for Kamala or its prominence in full clarity. The cliffhanger ending has added more questions to the list of unanswered questions from episode 2.

Ms Marvel Episode 4 Still 2

At least, it’s good to know that Kamala now has Kareem to fight alongside whenever the bad guys return. Let’s hope the makers give better transparency about the bangle and its truth, the meaning of the train visuals, what happened to Aisha and Hasan and the truth/purpose of Kamala and her powers in the next episode.

Ms Marvel Episode 4 Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Episode 4 was good but not better than the last three episodes. It was fun to watch but didn’t offer anything startling regarding revelations. Aramis Knight and Farhan Akhtar made a promising MCU debut. However, Waleed’s fate was disheartening.

Ms Marvel Episode 5 will release on July 6, 2022.
