Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Review Contains No Spoilers
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode 1 begins where the last episode of season 2 ends. After saving the world again, Number 5 and his siblings return home only to find out it’s not their home. In fact, it’s not even their academy, and their father, Reginal Hargreeves (Colm Feore), doesn’t even recognise them. It’s not the Umbrella Academy but The Sparrow Academy.
For months, the show’s creators have teased us with the Umbrella Academy Vs Sparrow Academy premise. Today, we finally get to watch it. It turns out that our team of Umbrellas landed in the wrong timeline and created a paradox. We now understand why Number 5 appears so furious in the trailer. Things never go well for them after saving the world, isn’t it?
The introduction to the Sparrows is done in style. In just 10 minutes of the episode, a sudden dance sequence will make you laugh out loud. Once you watch the dance number break out, you know the season will be crazier than the last two seasons.

The Sparrows are equally powerful, messed up and hilarious as the Umbrellas. That’s why it is interesting to watch the face-off. Number Five is sick of saving the world and desperately wants to retire. Vanya comes out as a transgender man Viktor in a wonderful manner. That is one of the most stand-out scenes of season 3. Similarly, each Umbrella member is going through/experiencing something.
After stopping the apocalypse twice, the Umbrellas not only have to deal with the Sparrows but save the world again. Given that their existence in the incorrect timeline has no significance, it may bring out the best or the worst in them. The makers explored every character and their experiences/challenges extensively in season 3. Up until the final episode, the show focused more on the individual than the apocalyptic aspect.
Even though The Umbrella Academy Season 3 looks promising and thrilling to watch, it is a baffling premise. With every episode, several questions are raised about the plot and the characters. However, hardly any of them are answered in the end. Due to this, the last episode comes off as a big question mark. But what’s interesting is that not only us but even the characters are confused about whatever is happening.

Coming to performances, Aidan Gallagher as Number Five has been the energy and driving force behind the show since season 1. He only gets better, ruder and angrier with every season. We learn that he’s also fed up of saving the world repeatedly. Elliot Page yet again delivers an impactful performance as Viktor. From season 1, the development of Page’s character has been brilliant.
Justin H Min is more in season 3 but as Ben from the Sparrows. He’s nothing like the Ben we know of the Umbrellas. Min’s character is full of himself. Yet he makes it hard to dislike Ben because he’s still so adorable! Actors Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castañeda, Tom Hopper, Colm Feore and Ritu Arya are fantastic in their respective roles.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Review: Final Thoughts
Overall, The Umbrella Academy Season 3 is about a chaotic timeline where the team Umbrella must confront multiple difficulties. The third season took a different approach to the “save the world” storyline than the first two. However, there are lingering questions which we hope the makers answer in the upcoming season. Yes, the chances of next season happening are high because the show ends on cliffhangers. To put it simply – it’s just the beginning of the end.
Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
