Blood Sisters is Filled with Catastrophic Events and Turns

The Nigerian four-part thriller series Blood Sisters is a dark, twisted and compelling look at the lives of two best friends whose friendship is tested by violence, abuse and betrayal. The show starts with a heavy note: The first episode begins with a flashback. Blood Sisters is a thrilling ride. From the first episode, you’ll be hooked. It has explored themes like domestic abuse, sexual assault and female empowerment.

Blood Sisters (2022) Review: Ini Dima-Okojie in a Suspense-Heavy Thriller

The show features a compelling cast, including Ini Dima-Okojie, Nancy Isime and Deyemi Okanlawon. The story is told from multiple perspectives — each character has their unique history with the other characters and their own set of problems they’re dealing with.

It makes sense because they’re all connected somehow; they all went to school together, had friends in common, or grew up together in the same neighbourhood. By sharing these experiences, we get a better picture of why these people are acting the way they are now and why they made certain decisions in the past or why they’re still making bad choices now that could have serious consequences down the line.

Blood Sisters Reveals How Trauma Can Impact Victims and Perpetrators

The opening scene introduces the characters and the situation in a way that’s easy to follow while also setting a dark tone. The following two episodes are slower-paced, focusing more on character development and backstory than on plot. There’s almost no action in these episodes at all.

It’s well written, beautifully shot and incredibly acted by an ensemble cast of talented actors from Nigeria. It’s about two best friends who run away from their abusive husbands and find themselves embroiled in a dangerous web of lies, corruption and murder.

Blood Sisters (2022) Review: Ini Dima-Okojie in a Suspense-Heavy Thriller

This isn’t an easy show to binge-watch since each episode takes its time developing its characters through dialogue rather than action. However, once you get past that hump, you’ll be rewarded with an engaging story about friendship and betrayal that touches on important social issues like spousal abuse and sexual assault — both topics often ignored in Nigerian films and television.

The show is a slow burn. It doesn’t start with a bang, but it does end with one. And if you like mysteries, Blood Sisters has plenty of them. The central mystery is what happened to Kola and why he was killed. Did he marry for money or love? Why did he have so many enemies? Is there more to his death than we know?

Love, Loss and Betrayal are Openly Explored in Blood Sisters Series

The first few episodes are also slow because they focus heavily on character development. We’re introduced to Sarah and Kemi as young girls who grew up together in an orphanage and have been best friends ever since.

Blood Sisters (2022) Review: Ini Dima-Okojie in a Suspense-Heavy Thriller

Blood Sisters is visually stunning and has a stellar cast. The cinematography is gorgeous, and there are many beautiful shots of Lagos. The acting is excellent across the board. The series gets off to a slow start but picks up in episode 2 and never looks back.

The story is gripping and shocking, especially for those who aren’t familiar with Nigerian culture or politics. A lot is going on here; it’s hard to keep track of all the characters, but some flashbacks help you follow along. And keep in mind that this isn’t a show about spousal abuse because of one incident — it’s about how deep-rooted and systemic this issue is in Nigeria.

  1. Great show! Awesome actors, I really enjoyed it, I was into it when …what? It’s over? Can’t wait for next season. I love your review and I love the show!!

  2. Full of ethnic stereotypes and way to over dramatic in my own personal opinion. I really don’t know when Nigerian filmmakers will understand that drama doesn’t mean going full throttle on the dramatic. That is why our films don’t ever get close to winning global awards in filmmaking. Couldn’t go past the 2nd part.

The emotional payoff of the film gives it a look other than being just a serial-killer thriller film.
