Catherine Cohen’s Standup- the Twist..? She’s Gorgeous Is Special and Unapologetic

It’s always a bit of a gamble when you go for comedy and musical elements in the same piece. You can either have the comedy overwhelm the musical elements or vice versa. And short of both coming together, you could wind up with something that sounds like a mess. But Catherine Cohen manages to do this in her special, and I loved it.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that the world can still be a wonderful place and not one filled with violence, the destruction of the environment, war, and the murder of innocent people.

Catherine Cohen is a Canadian comedian with a unique style of humour. She blends music and comedy into an informative and entertaining show. Her special is titled The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous, which features her in the element.

The opening track is a spoken-word rap about how she got to today, and it’s just brilliant. It starts with some heavy beats but then gives way to Catherine’s incredible singing voice. This song is so catchy that it repeatedly played in my head as I watched this memorable show, which just proved it was one of the best songs were ever written.

The Tone of Delivery for the Comedy is Apt in The Twist..? She’s Gorgeous

I was pleasantly surprised by the opening. It’s nice to see a topical comedy that isn’t all about talking about political issues or current events because it’s always tough to find something new and exciting to talk about for a comedy special. Not that Catherine Cohen isn’t political, but she mixes a few political jokes with her standup.

When you’re a comedian, you have to play with people. If you don’t use your audience to tell a joke, they won’t laugh.

Comedians that rely on spectacle or shock value are not my favourite, but comedians like Catherine Cohen, who can make me laugh with just the sound of their voice and the content of their jokes, that’s what I love.

Catherine Cohen takes on a lot of significant subjects in her special, including her battle with fat shaming, body image and the concept of how women are supposed to act in public. While there is humour throughout the special, she doesn’t shy away from addressing serious issues. She tackles everything with humour.

Catherine Cohen Makes Her Mark With the Twist..? She’s Gorgeous

She’s a standup comedian who is pretty confident and doesn’t fit into the stereotypical female comedian mould. It was refreshing to see that she didn’t try to make light of anything or take herself too seriously. This is one of the most interesting specials I’ve seen in quite some time, maybe even ever.

Catherine Cohen: The Twist...? She's Gorgeous (2022) Review: Hilarious with Fantastic Music

Her pitch-perfect voice and intense delivery immediately drew me in. I was already a fan of this comedian before I saw this special, but I can definitely say that Catherine Cohen is my new favourite comedian after watching it.

Stream It or Skip It?

The special is hilarious and very honest about how Catherine Cohen got to where she is today, making her stand out from other comics. It was refreshing to see a woman stand up and be so unapologetic about things that women go through or that society tells us we should deal with. I found myself liking the honesty in this standup special, and I highly recommend it!

Catherine Cohen: The Twist..? She’s Gorgeous is streaming on Netflix.
