Our Beloved Summer episode 14 starts with Yeon-su reliving her past – her getting bullied in the playground because she did not have parents, her friends decided to not be friends since she did not buy them anything and everything is taken from her thanks to the crippling debt. Then we get to know about the first time Ung called her after their breakup asking why they need to break up.

Poor Yeon-su cries and tells him that she is in a financial crisis which he shouldn’t be a part of. Unfortunately, Ung doesn’t hear the entirety of what she says and tells her that it’s ridiculous that she’s abandoning him because of that. In the present, we are back to Ung asking Yeon-su why she broke up with him. This time around though, she doesn’t tell him the entire truth.

We finally get to know what Ung and Yeon-su’s grandmother talked about the other night – she asks him to stay by her side for a long time since she has never had anyone she could really rely on. So, he should never leave her alone after this. This is when Ung asks her whether something happened to their family. Both Ung and grandmother think of that answer.

Off to drop Yeon-su, Ung gets flocked by school children, thanks to the documentary, who ask him all kinds of questions. Meanwhile, Yeon-su is annoyed by all the attention that is being showered, especially the discussion taking place at work. Surprisingly, though, she asks her colleagues out to eat that night to make up for the inconvenience that shooting must’ve been.

Meanwhile, the somewhat heated conversation from the other night seems to have had a sad effect on NJ, who looks heartbroken and says that she doesn’t have any friends. She meets up with Ji-ung and they discuss loneliness but he runs away (yes, literally runs away) when she asks whether he has fought with Ung.

That night, after the office night out, Yeon-su and Ung have a sweet and nostalgic conversation. Surprisingly, and very sweetly, he appears behind her and tells her to tell him everything since he doesn’t understand, but remembers everything that he tells her. They walk down hand-in-hand and it’s honestly adorable watching them go through these issues together.

That night, picking up after her grandmother, Yeon-su realises that her grandmother is looking at retirement homes. The realisation hits Yeon-su like a bag of bricks. On the other hand, Ung researches studying at French architecture universities.

The next morning, in Our Beloved Summer episode 14, Yeon-su prepares a heavy breakfast for her grandmother and implores her to stay with her for a long time. She even tries to bribe her with trips and shopping to make her stay with her. It’s so heartbreaking to watching Yeon-su breaking down inside but still keeping it together as she asks her grandmother whether she likes staying with her – everyone might hate her, but she surely must like her. She implores her to stay with her since she never wants to be alone again.

In the epilogue, Ji-ung goes home to see a pair of shoes outside his house. He goes in and finds his mother waiting for him. She wants to talk about his work but he shuts her down and asks her to not find a renewed interest in something she has never previously done. She, however, all of a sudden asks him to film her, since he can film anyone and everyone. Ji-ung is shocked at the request and even more so when she says that she is going to die soon.

Summing up: Our Beloved Summer episode 14

our beloved summer episode 14

Good god what an extremely sad episode. Thank god there’s no break-up in sight and if anything, Yeon-su and Ung’s relationship seems to be evolving in a mature and healthy way. However, the backstories of these characters are just so heartbreaking and the way they are dealing with it is even sadder.

All three of our protagonists have deep abandonment issues that, obviously, does not leave easily. Navigating those feelings with the changing times is hard and that’s evident in poor Yeon-su’s life who has never faced anything but hardship and rejection. You just want to help the poor girl and give her a hug. We see a bit less of Ung in Our Beloved Summer episode 14, but his abandonment episode is something that is deeply seated in my heart and I can never forget it.

Meanwhile, Ji-ung’s issues, though focused on less, is also apparent. His mother’s sporadic attention towards him is toxic and unstable and could not have been easy to grow up with. In adulthood, he’s obviously distant and angry about it. However, this new twist is sure to bring all those feelings that he desperately wants to keep buried up to the surface. Let’s hope the guy gets some closure if he chooses to go through with his mother’s documentary. God knows he needs a break.

Our Beloved Summer is streaming on Netflix.
