Seal Team Review: Struggles for Good Food and Humour

Seal Team, a Netflix animated film, features J.K. Simmons (Claggart), Kristen Schaal (Beth), Jessie T. Usher (Quinn), Patrick Warburton (Geraldo), Matthew Rhys (Grimes), Julian Alexander Smith (Benji) and several others. Directed by Greig Cameron (screenplay) and Kane Croudace, the story is by Brian Cleveland and Jason Cleveland. The duration of the film is 1 hour 30 minutes approx.

The synopsis reads, “Fearless seal Quinn assembles a squad of misfit recruits to stand up to ruthless sharks with razor-sharp teeth and reclaim the open sea.”

Netflix’s Seal Team Review Contains No Spoilers

Quinn and his fellow seals assemble a team to fight the sharks in Seal Team. Quinn establishes the team after the death of his best buddy Benji, who was eaten by a shark. He wants to be certain that no more seals are eaten by sharks while on the hunt for food. Claggart, a military-trained seal, helps them in forming a solid seal team capable of fighting the giant sharks.

We watch the seals come up with numerous strategies to deal with the sharks for an hour. The concept of seals vs sharks is amusing. However, putting the plan into action is not so simple.  At least that’s what we see in the film.  More than an hour seems excessive for a tale like this.

Seal Team Review: Struggles for Good Food and Humour

Seal Team, a Netflix animated film, has a fascinating beginning. It goes on and on when they build a team and put their plan into effect. The seals and sharks don’t talk in simple language. There’s always a joke or pun in their dialogue. Sometimes, it works, and most of the time, the jokes don’t land. Both the seals and sharks want food. As they struggle for food, we struggle to find an element that will keep us entertained.

It’s a goofy flick that doesn’t capture your attention for long. It’s a tragedy; the tale isn’t interesting, given the excellent voice cast and crisp animation. The last 20 minutes has some terrific action where the animation shines the best. Sadly, it is dragged a lot. It isn’t easy to stay watching something that doesn’t completely interest you.

Seal Team Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Seal Team could have done better if it hadn’t been subjected to so many bad jokes. Midway through the film, the plot loses its purpose. You know the seals are going to win as it’s made with an intent to make the viewers feel good, sit back and enjoy something. But the weak screenplay won’t make you stay till the end.

The film is now streaming on Netflix.
