Netflix’s Flip a Coin Review Contains Mild Spoilers

ONE OK ROCK is a popular Japanese rock band that was formed in 2005. Band members Takahiro Moriuchi, Toru Yamashita, Ryota Kohama, and Tomoya Kanki have given many hits together. Their most popular numbers are ‘Naihishinsho’, ‘Wherever You Are’, ‘The Beginning’, and ‘Broken Heart of Gold’. Flip a Coin Netflix documentary shows how the pandemic impacted the band members and their concerts.

Life has not been the same for anyone since March 2020. Even though we are slowly reopening the world, the fear still lingers, the loss is still fresh, and the virus still dangles like a sword on our heads. However, now we know what precautions to take, there are vaccines available and people are used to the lifestyle changes. But 2020 felt like a never-ending painful trial for every person. It was dreadful, lonely and almost made us lose hope.

Talking about the documentary ‘Flip a Coin’ shows how ONE OK ROCK band members were affected by the pandemic and lockdown. They talk about how it feels like ages since the lockdown, their fear about how long it will go on and the uneasy feeling of not performing in front of the live audience. The documentary is a collection of intimate interviews, live rehearsals and concert footage and more.

As viewers, we enjoyed seeing our favourite artists perform live during the online concert. However, the truth behind that camera is something else. The singers miss the joy of seeing thousands of fans cheering their names and singing along; they miss the craze of a live audience and love that feels enormous to experience. At one point, one of the singers says, “Please sing along with us” during the live video concert. That moment breaks my heart.

Watching them perform amid a massive and empty hall with hardly anyone around is a sight that’s not pleasant. It was the need of the hour but something that no artist or layperson will forget. The documentary also gives us some glimpse of the band members’ personal lives, their equation and practise sessions. It’s good to see them express their feelings and reveal how difficult it is for them also to survive amid the pandemic.

Flip a Coin Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, the documentary gives us an insight into how every person was at the receiving end of the sorrow that the pandemic brought along. Due to fame and money, people often believe that celebrities don’t have to endure as much pain as common people. While being rich have its perks, artists who love performing and being around fans did have a hard time.
