Sophie A Murder in West Cork Review: Compelling Murder Mystery

Sophie A Murder in West Cork, a real-life based mini-series, is currently streaming on Netflix. Directed by John Dower, the series is about the infamous murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier that happened 25 years ago in Ireland’s West Cork region. The three-episode series features Sophie’s relatives, officers and journalists who worked on the case from the beginning.

The IMDb synopsis for the Netflix series reads, “The documentary follows the investigation of Sophie Toscan Du Plantier, a French film and TV producer who was killed while at her isolated holiday cottage in West Cork, Ireland, in 1996.” The duration of the episodes is between 55 minutes to an hour.

The first episode of Sophie A Murder in West Cork is called The World Turned Upside Down. It shows us how people found out about Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s death. The cops found her body in such a bad state that it sent chills down their spine by thinking how she was butchered to death. The incident had shaken the entire West Cork as they’ve never witnessed a murder before.

Sophie’s family members are still grieving as they share how radiant she was. The cops and journalists talk about how they went about with the investigation and still have numerous unanswered questions. The first episode ends with an intriguing note that you can’t help but immediately click on the second episode – The Suspect.

Without giving away the name in my Sophie A Murder in West Cork review, I’d say that The Suspect is quite a significant and tricky episode. Whoever the suspect is addressed in the video back then is a part of the documentary and his side of the story to tell. So all these angles and confusions make the story complicated yet startling to watch.

In episode 3, Justice, we see how the family held hope for years that Sophie Toscan Du Plantier will receive justice. Sophie was a known personality, so her murder mystery always grabs eyeballs and attention. Every time one reads about it, they are fascinated and want to know more. That’s exactly what the Netflix mini-series does to you.

Sophie: A Murder in West Cork is a compelling murder mystery. It’s good that it was limited to three episodes as anything more than that would just fog our minds. It’s an unsolved mystery that went closer to getting solved many times but never stayed absolute.
