Loki Episode 1 Recap: Glorious Purpose

Just a few weeks ago, we saw WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Today, Marvel dropped the much-awaited Loki Episode 1 on Disney+ Hotstar today. Titled Glorious Purpose, Michael Waldron has written the episode directed by Kate Herron. The series stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Eugene Cordero, and Eugene Cordero. The duration of the episode is 50 minutes.

Before you read any further, let me tell you that the Loki Episode 1 Recap contains SPOILERS. So proceed at your own will. The episode starts with the scene from Avengers: Endgame showing us how the Loki from 2012 gets the tesseract and disappears. In the Marvel series, the God of Mischief lands hard in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia.

Seeing a man in a flashy outfit falling from the sky, a few Mongolians go near Loki. He says his iconic lines when he wakes up – I’m Loki of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose. Immediately, Time Variance Authority (TVA) hunters enter, and they capture him for breaking the sacred timeline. People who break the sacred timeline are considered criminal and are addressed as Variants.

Loki is Variant L1130, and his powers don’t work at the TVA. He’s baffled by everything that’s happening and tries to resist several times. During his temporal aura check, Tom Hiddleston’s character doubts if he’s a robot and not knowing it all this time. There are many such humorous moments at the beginning of the episode that will make you laugh.

As seen in the trailer already, Miss Minutes (voiced by Tara Strong), a cartoon mascot is telling the God of Mischief about how he broke the sacred timeline. In Loki Episode 1, she tells him the Time Keepers’ story and how they created the sacred timeline to prevent the multiverse war. He is taken to Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a judge at the TVA who pleads him guilty of breaking the sacred timeline. You’ll be surprised to know that Thor’s brother is aware of Tony Stark’s time travel (Robert Downey Jr). How did he know that? You have to watch this one because it’s hilarious.

As the judge announces a death-like sentence to Loki, she’s interrupted by Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson). Mobius is the agent of TVA who tells the judge that he can look after Loki as he knows everything about the God of Mischief. However, the judge secretly questions him if he’s doing what she thinks he’s doing as it might end up being a disaster. We aren’t told what Mobious’ intentions are until the end of the episode.

Mobius appears to be an admirer of Loki Laufeyson yet tells him the harsh truth in an amusing way. Mobius takes Loki away in a room to have a conversation with him and show him how his timeline was supposed to be. While showing him a few clips until his mother Frigga’s death in Thor: The Dark World, he keeps asking the God of Mischief one question constantly – Why does he kill people and if he enjoys it! Hiddleston’s character is annoyed with these videos and is still full of himself in his head.

For some time, he manages to get away from Mobius in an attempt to escape. However, when he tries to take back his tesseract from Casey, a TVA office drone (played by Eugene Cordero), he sees many infinity stones in a drawer. Casey tells him that they have many infinity stones at TVA, and some of their staff use them as a paperweight. He is shocked and finally realises that TVA is a mightier place than he thought of.

Along with dealing with the God of Mischief, TVA is fighting a severe threat. One of the Variants is killing TVA’s Minutemen in abundance. So Mobius has another big issue to tackle with. When he goes back to the room and finishes the tape, he sees everything that happens – Odin’s death, brotherhood with Thor and getting killed by Thanos. He is in tears and pain, and watching him cry pierces through your heart.

The God of Mischief finally tells Owen Wilson’s Mobius about the reason he kills people. That’s another emotional scene you weren’t mentally prepared to watch. Finally, Mobius tells Loki why he’s helping him and reveals the Variant that’s killing his Minutemen. I’m not going to reveal who this Variant is, as I want your jaws to drop just like it happened with me. The episode proves that he indeed has a glorious purpose, at least at the TVA.

Loki Episode 1 Recap: Final Word

Loki Episode 1 proved a great start to Tom Hiddleston’s show. The episode was full of suspense, emotions, action and major surprises. While everything about the episode is spectacular, the lengthy Mobius-Loki conversation is the most arresting and informative. We truly don’t know a lot about the God of Mischief. With WandaVision and TFATWS, MCU went at a slow pace to unravel the mess. But with this series, Kate Herron and Michael Waldron have packed lots of punch in the first episode itself. It’s a great start to the enormous trouble that lies ahead.

Loki Episode 1 is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
