It’s a new week with a new challenge in MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 21. In the garden area, judges Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo call together all the contestants. They inform that it is going to be a team challenge this week, but nothing like before. This time, the cooks have to compete with the chefs.
MasterChef Australia Season 13 contestants will be divided into a team of 4 people. Each team has to compete against a team of chefs from different restaurants. The restaurants that are a part of this challenge are – Tonka, MoVida, Lucy Liu and Stokehouse. The cooking will be held either in the MasterChef kitchen or the respective restaurant. The team that loses will be sent directly to Sunday’s elimination.
The first team challenge was held in the show’s kitchen. MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 21 was called ‘Service Brigade Immunity Challenge: Tonka’. The first team was the Pink team that consisted of Depinder, Elise, Eric and Linda. Tonka’s co-owner and chef Adam D’Sylva was in a mood to compete as it was his chance for redemption. In MasterChef Australia Season 11, he lost the immunity challenge against the contestant Larissa Takchi.
The contestants and the chefs had to cook a three-course meal in different cuisines. The judges will toss the coin, and whoever wins the toss will get a chance to select two courses. The losing team will get a chance to select one course. Team Pink wins the toss and decides to go with Indian food as the main course and Mexican for the entrée. The Tonkas select French for the dessert dish.
Tonka is known for its exquisite Indian food and curries. So Adam is happy with the main course. On the other hand, Depinder has been at the top consistently because of her Indian curries. So she is also excited to cook another curry dish. What’s interesting was both the teams decide to cook Prawn curry as their main course! Depinder decides to serve only two prawns in her curry. When Melissa questions her if the quantity is enough or not, she decided to add fried eggplant to the dish. Well, I don’t think that covers the fact that the main dish has only two prawns!
The Mexican entrée was a challenge for the Tonka as it is not their speciality. But the chefs decide to give their best and make steak tartare with tortilla chips. The Pink team had selected the first course, but Eric was struggling to fillet his kingfish. That’s when we got to see one of the most heartwarming moments in MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 21. Chef Adam walks towards Eric and shows him how to fillet the fish properly. Thanks to the Chef, Eric’s confidence bounced back, and the cooks served kingfish ceviche.
Coming to dessert, the Tonka team had the upper hand here as they have a three Michelin-starred pastry chef making Breton sable with raspberry and pistachio parfait. But the Pink team also serves a mouthwatering dessert by Elise called baked plums with custard. Both the desserts looked tasty, but Tonka gave the full French feeling to the judges.
When the judges tasted the dishes made by the Pink team and the Tonka chefs, they cannot stop praising their prawn curries. Both the teams made delicious entrées with some flaws; their desserts were also yummy AF. But it was tough to decide which prawn curry they liked the best – Tonka’s Bengali seafood dish or Depinder’s Prawn Ghee Roast. Strangely, they enjoyed the fried eggplant served with Depinder’s curry, resulting in the Pink team’s victory.
Masterchef Australia’s latest episode was full of fun. While I didn’t taste any of the curries, Adam’s Bengali curry was a treat to the eyes. But as the show’s loyalist, I also trust the judges’ judgement. So this team challenge win has helped Depinder, Elise, Eric, and Linda save themselves from the elimination.
MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 21: What’s next?
In the next episode, the green team consisting of Dan, Jess, Scott and Tommy will compete against MoVida at their restaurant.
