Dark 7 White is a political thriller series directed by Sattwik Mohanty. The series stars Sumeet Vyas, Jatin Sarna and Nidhi Singh, alongside other cast members. The story is adapted from the novel Dark White by Shweta Brijpuria.
While we feel betrayed by the government’s decision to supervise the OTT platforms, the number of political thrillers have not come to a pause and keep raining this year. Now Alt Balaji and Zee5 have brought Dark 7 White to add on to the list.
The series starts with the death of young CM Yudhveer Singh (Sumit Vyas) and it progresses with the investigation of the same. With each episode, the police keeps getting confused with the number of suspects increasing. Also, the story progresses in reverse where we can see Sumit Vyas’s life and how we got to his death. The absurd part of this is that the story is narrated by him which makes no sense because he is dead and even at the end there is no twist that he comes alive.
The investigating officer Abhimanyu Singh (Jatin Sarna) gets trapped in the labyrinth of suspects popping up every minute. Also, as in every show, the main character is a cold-hearted killer but some of the killings make no sense at all. All the characters are predictable and what the writers maybe considered as a big twist in their head are actually overused scenes visible in every other political series.
Sumit Vyas and Jatin Sarna have given an outstanding performance and deserve recognition for their roles but it all feels wasted on a series that has nothing worth remembering about it. A special mention is a must for Tanya Kalra (Greshma) who seemed as manipulative and vicious as the character required. All the other actors have done a decent job.
The episodes are not more than eighteen minutes which makes it short, crisp and to-the-point. But more than that there is nothing novel about Dark 7 White. Since the show is supposed to target the younger audience, a lot of cuss words are used but it gets irritating after a point because they are used endlessly without any reason.
The background score perfectly suits the mood of the series with a lot of bloodshed and crime. The title track is upbeat and sounds good. The cinematography by Sandeep Yadav is good enough to appreciate, although the direction could have been better. All the long shots seem rushed and fail to make an impact.
To be very honest about Dark 7 White, it all seems to be something made for a select audience. People who take their life decisions based on WhatsApp forwards or are blind supporters of political parties in trend will like the show more. It has several scenes which try too hard to support feminism but fall on the face with unnecessary acts. Also, the show proves itself to be homophobic from time to time. It gets difficult to take the show seriously when you’re faced with this, and after it ends, Dark 7 White is nothing more than just another political thriller without many punches.
Summing up: Dark 7 White
Dark 7 White fails to create tension and impact with its cliched plotline and some very problematic views. There’s nothing new on the plate here, and it mostly feels like we are watching just another series. In spite of favourable performances, the basic plot lacks depth and thus cannot hold on to the mystery and intrigue that you’d expect from a series with such a theme. All in all, it’s disappointing, to say the least. However, if you like Sumit Vyas, then you might just want to jump into it, considering the runtime.
