Amazon’s Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra! Review: A Stimulating Tale of a Dreamer

South Indian movies always come up with a new story that becomes an inspiration for Bollywood to work harder. Such kind of movie is Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra!, also known as Soorarai Pottru, a 2020 Tamil action drama.

Directed by Sudha Kongara, this film is a story about a young, well-educated man who has a dream of starting an airline. The story is not just about a business, but also how he wants to launch India’s first low-cost airline called Deccan Air.

For fulfilling his dreams he leaves his job as a pilot along with his friends but the biggest challenge is to take down some of the biggest names in the aviation industry like Paresh Goswami, who is played by Paresh Rawal. He is not some irrelevant side character. He adds a lot of depth to the film, along with a classy characterization.

The movie is a bit stretched in its narrative and not in the right way. For example, it consistently keeps showing scenes of struggles but instead of feeling bad the audience might feel bored after a point. Also, the explanation on financial matters is not given much screen time and it might seem a little artificial for a common man to suddenly gather so much money that he starts an airline. After a time, the struggle scenes seem repetitive and irrelevant to the flow of the story.

It is successful in portraying the known fact that capitalists and bureaucrats act as an ally to each other and are successful in crushing the common people’s dreams whenever they feel a threat to their authority.  As a particular audience of South Indian movies, this Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra! is balanced when it comes to action.

The technical aspects of the movie are strong. The background music definitely benefits the movie narration and its music is quite great. Director Sudha Kongara Prasad has proved her worth as a brilliant director and woman of substance. The actors, especially the main lead, has done a brilliant job. Suriya as the inspiring Maara is quite the treat to watch on-screen. Aparna Balamurali as his headstrong wife Bommi is great as well, and although their relationship is not really delved into, the director has done a great job at portraying a very strong female lead who is, in no way, inferior to her husband.

Paresh Rawal as Paresh Goswami shines as well, although his character spews out a lot of cliched “baddy lines” and does some typical bad guy stuff that we have seen before. But nonetheless, he stands as a formidable foe against Maara and brings a lot of tension on-screen.
