Bless The Harts episode 5, titled ‘Pound Pinchers’, has Betty getting conscious about losing her charm and getting fat and old again. To boost her confidence, Brenda takes her to Pound Pitchers, where there are people who want to lose some pounds, so that Betty can feel confident. On the other hand, Jenny decides the keep ‘The Last Supper’ open 24×7 after Wayne’s uncalled for sexism which pushes her to go for it anyway, and then there’s this hilarious montage of her being stubborn!
There are two parallel plots in the episode, both revolving around female identity – Betty and Brenda trying to feel young and charming but discovering themselves in a different way altogether and Jenny facing the stereotype revolving around the vulnerability of women working in night shifts. While Betty and Brenda start their comedy career in this episode, they have to face sexist remarks here as well that is all so common in the comedy circle. On the other hand, Jenny continues dealing with obnoxious people in the diner to prove a point and both the themes are as relatable as they get.
The pressure on Jenny to prove herself to Wayne, whose sexism is followed by infuriating condescendence, leads to her being robbed. It’s saddening to see this because she complies with everything silently so as not to give Wayne another reason to underestimate her.
Summing up, Bless The Harts episode 5 says a lot about society and people in general in fewer words. Being an adult animation sitcom, the series in its 2nd season hasn’t lost its charm and every episode has something thought-provoking to rub on viewers’ faces!
